Is anyone here doing Film Studies in TCD? I want to do it in September and applied for 6 film studies combination courses there on my CAO. I just heard that all the arts students in TCD are snobs and arseholes...I just wanted to check if that stereotype is true? Some of the posts here are kind of saying the same thing. Also let me know if you think the film courses in any other uni's are better...thanks!

    Hi Kelix,

I don't do Film Studies, nor am I an arts student, so I can't say much in way of the academia involved. I know some who do Film Studies and they see it's stimulating, if strict - they insist on punctuality and attendance registers. I obviously don't know what the film studies courses are like elsewhere, but Trinity has a very strong reputation and fairly much has something for everybody, so it's very definitely worth giving it a go.

The arts students aren't as you've heard them to be, although there will always be a minority of idiots. Stereotypes never really do hold true, and the range of personalities in Trinity is so broad that it's impossible to make anything more than very general generalisations. I have good friends at Trinity who are quite talented, they're confident people, but certainly not arrogant.

My experience with the arts students has always been quite good. I've always found them more social and outgoing than my fellow Hamilton folk. They're not as cliquey as you might expect, it takes a little bit for them to become familiar with you if you meet them through societies, but there are plenty of opportunities for that. The most I've ever felt negatively is that some of them are loud and annoying, but once again, you'll get people like that anywhere.

One thing I do think is worth mentioning is that Trinity has a very distinct social culture as opposed to other colleges. I won't go into this at length, but the style of socialising is more old style, with receptions after events and a trip down to the pub when you take part in a society's social life. There's much less of a nightclub culture then, say, in UCD. There is of course variance, not every society is as I've described it, but I've always found the arts students I've met quite willing to have a conversation and meet new people. I think you should take the opportunity.

Really?! Stupidest thing I've read on boards in along time haha ... A few of my mates do Film Studies as part of TSM and they all love it. The hours aren't bad at all , they have screenings but you can also take out the movies from the library and watch them at home if you prefer/can't make it. Assignments throughout the year mean the final exam is worth about 50 or 60%...

    Hey Kelix
I'm doing Film Studies for my first year at TCD, too. I'm an international student from the US, so obviously I wouldn't know from personal experience if the arts students at Trinity are snobs or not, but I don't think I am! I'd say I'm pretty friendly so if you do decide on Trinity, look me up on Facebook if you'd like :)

    Not true!!! It's a long-running stereotype that's sort of a joke now.

I don't do Film Studies, but I do languages, and there aren't any real snobs or arseholes in either of my classes. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I haven't met them if they do!

People come from all over and from all backgrounds. I've met some really nice people in TCD arts and you'll soon find that most of the people who use the word "Trinners" and talk that way don't actually go to TCD :)
