What are peoples thoughts on the Toyota FT-86

It was recently caught testing in Germany and the final production version is due to debut at this years Tokyo motor show

I saw the second concept version for myself at the Geneva motor show earlier this year and have to say it looked pretty damn good!

Definitely seems to have all the right ingredients

    - Coupe
    - 2.0 boxer engine
    - RWD + LSD

Meant to be priced affordably too!

Jebus - if it looks like that in real life and packs some proper Toyota punch and reliability then I'd like a go in one :)

They tend to come up with the odd gem. Very nice in the pic.

edit: the AE86 was one of their best imo - here's hoping :D

Should be a cracking car, looks unreal and good to see Toyota putting out a perfomance car again. My garage will look nice with this and the CRZ parked up :pac:

I'm sure the looks will be watered-down by the time it goes into production but anyway, for a celica replacement they definitely seem to be onto a good thing

The 2.0 litre subaru boxer engine will be interesting ... pity it's not turbo'd!

If It had been launched when it was promised it'd be due replacement now.
Crazy that a company pulling the finger out and building a rwd small sportscar is such a big deal.

It suppose to be afordable, but I am wondering how much tax and andther goodies will be droped on it by our lovely government.

I presume it's still going to be on the 30k++ mark?

2.0 n/a? I thought it was turbo. Anyway I am really looking forward to it. It might be new mx5 mk1 ( non convertible ) of modern age!

probably the first non hilux/landcruiser toyota design ive liked since 2000 , hopefully it hits here in N/A or Turbo 2.0 petrol ,

    so far :
looks nice, really sporty and agressive :D
could be the re-emergence of sports coupe's :D
engine isnt something pidly ( <2 litre) :D
    not diesel :D
    RWD :D

anything below 40k and Id say theyll sell a shedload

also please let them keep the alloys off that 1st concept pic - theyre lovely looking

i dont think 40k is affordable price here. i dont exect it to be 20k, but 40k is way too much. for 56k you can get brand new 370z or mx5 27k.

i know you are saying loewer then 40k, but 39.999eu does not look like good price lol.

    still love the car thought!

Realistically, what will this car's competitors be?

From the pictures, it looks to be the same size roughly as an Audi A5 Coupe.

Is it going to be aiming for this and the 3 Series coupe, or the smaller stuff, like Hyundai Coupe?

    Cracking looking car though...

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

And here was me thinking Toyota had completely given up on anything sporty. No more Celica, MR2, Supra. No more F1.

And then this! RWD with the boxer engine should be interesting!

Keep it well below the €40k mark here and there's not much competition going on. Although that might be hard with the old fashioned dirty 2l petrol from Subaru? VRT 36%, motor tax €1,050 or even €2,100? The latter would prevent the car from ever being for sale here in Ireland :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭ION08

    I doubt it's gunning for 3series and A5's.

I'd think it's main competitors would be the likes of Hyundai Coupe, Audi TT's, MX-5's

Id say its similar in size to the scirocco , but considering its engine and drivetrain Id say it might be a choice for 3 series coupe drivers but in an entirely different leauge to the TT or hyundai coupe

Surely it will be quite a bit bigger than an AE86, they were/are quite a compact little bus really.

The way I see it, is like a competitor to all those cheap, relatively quick and dynamic coupes that you think to yourself "aww man if only it was RWD" .. so yeah hyundai coupe, audi tt, celica 190, honda integras etc ..

But as Shadow heart said, there really hasn't been anything like it since the AE86 - the only one i can think of are the Nissan silvias / SX's

you see... i was afraid to put them in same bracket as scirocco or type-r or OPc as its totaly different animal with RWD added to it.

i would not put it up with 3 series coupe as its more of luxo and "phat" coupe style.

If i would be looking for Cheapish brand new RWD car then my only option is this or mx5. Mx5 would not be such a good deal, as you can get only 1.8 version in ireland...

i was just wondering now. Will it actuolly matter to 90% of buyers that its RWD? petrol heads like us see it as heaven, but some girl or a lad that just looks for flashy motor wount give two ****s about it being RWD. he will just go and buy GOLF GTI 5 door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,224 ✭✭✭✭Marty McFly

Would it not be more in competition/in line with the Honda S2000?

    Similar engine size, rwd.

you are correct , its very much an enthusiasts car , but thats what I also like about it , the world seems to be ridding itself of decent enthusiast cars (type r's out of production , the evo out of production ) and everyones gone frontwrong wheel drive mad :( , then all of a sudden the worlds blandest motor company throws us something worth having. It probably wont become very popular , it will probably only be bought by enthusiasts, but like the ae86 it will still be here in 20 years being kept together by enthusiasts while the rest of the world pots around in fwd sh*tebox 1.2 litre diesel hybrid plugin yokes

totally agree there lad. It is just fantastic news to see a light RWD car, considering this world becoming more and more away from motorhead enthusiast, and looks more after A to B drivers these days. Simple economics: there is way more of them then us :(.

I still dont know what to make out of price on this. they say its affordable, but is it affordable to someone who thinks 335i is affordable, becouse he cant buy m3? Or is it affordable for middle class fella, who does not want Golf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭ION08

see the thing about the s2000 is that it is not being sold in ireland anymore and they were quite thirsty and poor emissions

This supposedly will have around 200bhp be fairly economical and clean too.

Plus the s2000 is a roadster with no back seats and not very practical!

There really is nothing to compare it to other than the plethora of affordable quick-ish FWD coupes - except this is RWD !! .. which is ibviously gonna be its unique selling point.

Price-wise i think in the states they aim to retail it at around $20k ~ so I would expect it to come in at around 30-35k over here

It's only direct rival at the moment is lotus I think. Lightweight, rwd, simple.

From what i have been told pricing will be around the 30k mark, emissions are unkown but i would like to see it come in the €600/year tax bracket. Irish release date is hopefully going to be 1st quater 2012.

Ive been waiting so long for a decent sporty toyota, when i was growing up you had the Celica and the Supra both cars as a child you wanted to have. The supra was the Toyota someday car for kids of my age. Hopefully this can be Toyotas modern day equivalent

When I was in secondary school myself and one of my school buddies both wanted a Celica once we could afford it. F knows what kids today aspire to, aside from 3 series coupes I can't see there being too much mainstream stuff for them.

I suppose the TT for the lads who use hair straighteners :pac:

I have my doubts that this will go on sale in Ireland. Hyundai have their RWD euro spec Genisis on sale in some european countries fitted with a 2.0T engine and they decided there was no market here for such a car so Unless the Toyota is going to be very cheap I doubt we'll get it.

Not in the flesh, saw the bit on Excellerate when Paddy drove it though. Cork, even the city wouldn't have loads of new TTs. RCZ etc about.

Ya but hasn't toyota always been hugely popular in ireland, and they are the biggest car company in the world, and i'm sure they could get these manufactured in britain for the uk and irish markets.

That remains to be seen. The current N/A 2l boxer petrol produces only 150BHP but is a very dirty engine with €1,050 tax in the Impreza (if it were still sold here). Add a turbo to get it to 200BHP and the tax will likely be twice that and the car will not be sold here as I already pointed out.

Still a good looking car though. Thanks to the greens that we probably won't be able to buy one :(

i dont think its a manufacturing thing , Id say a fair few of these will be imported into Ireland , but they may not end up at dealerships, at the end of the day its a 2 litre petrol engine thats focused on performance , it will probably sit in tax band c at best , personal bet D , and since its not band A, B or commercial no poverty spec paddy will have any interest in any car that costs more than 156 a year to tax ,there wouldnt be much point in anyone aside from maybee 1 or 2 dealers in dublin holding any of them

Well only boring Toyota is popular here. damn, we don't even have camry here :(

We will need to see in which tax bracket it will go. No one wants to buy car which is more then 150eu to tax for year in this country.

Let's hope they will offer it here.

I like the look of this car. As has been previously discussed i'd be a little worried that it'll only be a moderately quick car. 2 litre non turbo boxer engine doesn't sound like its going to set the world on fire.

It looks like a proper sort of sports coupe, i hope it goes like one as well. Otherwise it'll be nothing more than a Hyundai coupe alternative.

Well it has been confirmed as Naturally Aspirated with Toyotas D4S injection system and Yamaha will be involved in developing the head (like the old beams engine) .... So i presume it should easily make 200bhp without a blower. - Will be an interesting engine :D .. Im sure (hoping) that the emissions will be reasonable enough.

The 150bhp subaru engine youre thinking of is the FB20 ... absolute dog of an engine ... primarily made for the US market :p

I don't agree with that lads, in fairness 2 litre cars have been selling grand well before 2008 and the cheaper tax. I'm kinda hoping it won't be too cheap or could end up being the next civic type r, with every skanger in ireland, buying one and basteradising it.

Manys the skanger had an AE86 in the 90s

yeah 2 litre cars were grand to tax before the goverment pointed out that you could 'save' money by buying a new car , if this was 2007 youd easily sell these things , it was easy enough to sell 530d's etc then too , but now id say youd struggle ever since ireland became awash with the "156 euro is too much tax to pay and diesel is great" mentality

I reckon the USC, high unemployment and many 26 to 35 year olds paying €300,000 mortgages may be a factor in them not being high sellers too :)

Subaru will have their version of the FT-86 too. It will be interesting to see how they price their version.
