Diagnostic light

    Am i right in saying that when the diagnostic light/engine fault light comes on in the dash that..90% of the time its due to faulty O2 sensors (lambda sensors) ??

    There are many reasons for it to come on. If you provide some more info then it could be narrowed down as to the cause.

    Give details of the car and type of driving done (urban /ex urban/ motorway) and when it got it's last service (oil, plugs, leads, filters, etc).

    Have you notice the car driving diferently, does it idle ok high or low and any smoke out the back? white/ black/ blue?

    its a mitsubishi colt 05 1.1 petrol

    When the light comes on first the car is very sluggish, then later the light stays on but it drives normal, then the following day the light is off and everthing is honky dory until a forthnight comes and it goes like that again.

    rural driving > 10mls a day, last service october> oil plugs air filter
    Dirty petrol? fuel filter?

    Doing some further reading, and it sounds like it could be emmisions related. There should be a code stored in the ecu that would give more info. I would get that done before doing anything else.

    Technically, any fault that throws up the light can be classed as 'emmissions related' as any sensor or electronic system fault will ultimatly effect the vehicle emissions. It doesn't have to be any of the direct exhaust sytems, i.e lamda's or egr valve. It can be anything such as coil packs, airflow meter etc

    just to update...

    got a neighbour to check with a handheld diag device

    and its the TPS > throttle position sensor

    my question is> can these sensors be affected by temperature ? cause sometimes when there's a sudden rainfall and a drop in temperature the diagnostic light comes on

    Its possible all right. If the potentiometer expands and contracts it will give the ECU wrong readings. The only way to see this though is on a live scan(data logger). It might be something as simple as needing a PCM recalibration. What car/engine/year is it? What exactly did it say about the TPS?
