I'm a 20 year old, 5ft7 male, basically looking to get fit over the Summer. I'm not too big a fan of bulking up (due to my modest stature) so I prefer a more defined, lean look, something similar to the gentleman from the Rubberbandits (search%3Fq%3Drubberbandits%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1276%26bih%3D652%26tbm%3Disch0%2C780&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=210&sqi=2&page=3&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:30&tx=85&ty=102&biw=1276&bih=652)! I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to fitness work so I really don't know where to begin with this, any ideas?

Aaaaand... helpful advice only from here on in, please guys.

Just lift weights...it's not as if you're gonna wake up the next morning an absolutely massive tank. Looking "lean" involves having a good amount of muscle mass at a low body fat %. Depending on how skinny/fat you are, you should bulk/cut while lifting, especially when skinny, to maximise your muscle gains. You can then cut down to your desired bf%,

    Seriously?

Well, I said I wanted to develop a lean physique, the guy from Rubberbandits has a lean physique. If I wanted a bulky physique, I would have asked for advice on a bulky physique. I really can't see how you're failing to grasp this.

Just train hard doing compound exercises that hit all the core muscle groups and eat clean. As said above, don't even worry about getting bulky, that won't happen over night as much as some people would like it to.

Rubberbandits don't look well. They look unhealthy. It's a health and fitness forum. People on here want you to be healthy, not unhealthy. You'd probably have do do a whole lotta cardio to get your weight down like that. I can't recommend a diet to go with it. As I said they look badly off like.

If you really want to look like below I would suggest three recommendations

    No weight training
Ensuring your diet is not at a caloric excess
    Staying out of the sunlight

There's nothing healthy about trying to compete in any high level sport, or get extremely muscular and lean, but no one goes on about it when someone asks that question.... Leave the lad alone, he wants the sorta look that chicks dig, that's grand.

If more people aspired to similar there'd be a lot less fat dudes with mediocre squats posting bad advice on this board.

the guy in the rubber bandits looks like hes sick or something..... id go as far as to say his diet probably consisits of beans on toast & 'spicy goujaaans''....if you want a proper lean look the i suggest going for the physique of maybe a cruiserweight wrestler....trying to adjust your body to look like that is madness :(..why would you want to look like that op??

    REYMYSTERIO1.jpg

take note OP...thats a healthy looking ''lean'' person....strong muscles good shape....not someone who looks like they are starving themselves & catabolic

now he weighs 175 lbs thats roughly about 12.5 stone i think.......id be more inclined to give you advice in that area...or is it just a 6pack your after?

Ha ha. Rubberbandits won't be seen competing in high level sport. For the record I'm not have a poke at the OP. If you'd like to post a comment that's helpful to the OP then please do so. I'm sure he could do with the advice of someone less fat with a better squat.

Does someone else want to call out the obvious on this, or should I?

Is anyone else lean enough / good enough at squatting to be allowed?

The rubberbandit guy is not carrying what I'd call a good amount of muscle mass.

    This, again.

Guys seriously the OP has a desired physique that he wants to attain, it's not up to you to judge whether that's a 'good' look or not. And tbf I don't think you can qualify those guys as looking unhealthy. Very lean, yes, but since when has low bf and slimness been unhealthy?

    The famine.

My earlier post was actually serious.
The guy in the rubberbandits is the default Irish man.

Am I the only one who actually thinks the rubberbandits dude has a bit of muscle on him?

Anyone who thinks they'd look like that by default just by dieting down is kidding themselves.

No. He looks like a lightweight boxer. http://allaboutboxingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pacquiao-marquez.jpg

He does. It's just that the boxers are posing and he's doing some sort of dance.

Do you think he's too skinny or are you just nit picking?

There is no need for the defensiveness.

I agree with the sentiment that he is not overly skinny and people are going overboard about it.

I just think you are going way too far in the other saying he looks like the dudes in the pic you posted.

Also, I should point out that almost nobody has even tried to help OP.
When your only contribution to the thread is to a arguement about if or if not the lad from the rubberbandits is too skinny, then you should really think twice before you start talking about other people nitpicking.

You're right, there is no need for defensivness. That's why I wasn't being defensive.

Well, we will have to agree to disagree so. I think they have a fairly similar build.

My point wasn't that your man from the rubberbandits isn't too skinny. It was that he is carrying a decent amount of muscle, enough that the OP would have to do more than diet down to look like that.

OP, to look like that you need to 1. Eat clean and 2. Hit the weights. Are you working out at all right now?
