Many people pass through this forum, owning many different cars and we all buy cars for our own personal reasons. Upon owning a car though there are always certain things in your car that make things easier for you and other things where you wonder did the manufacturer think about what they were doing at all.

So what is the 1 quirky gadget-like thing in your car you like most and thing you dislike most?

mine has this really cool fitness feature where the radio comes on when your away from the car, flattens the battery, and forces you to walk/cycle instead

and state the car you currently drive too :)

Head unit the major plus for me.

I don't love it is the problem. I loved the last car despite it being a worse car than my current one.

One thing I love in my car is the "Scan" function on the radio. It automatically cycles through all stations every 5 seconds continually until you press the button again. I often use it when I hear ads or just want a good song, much quicker and safer then manually searching through stations when driving.

    VTEC :pac:

And the age it takes to get to it

Best is mpg, worst is the litre of oil every 12/1300 miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,361 ✭✭✭YouTookMyName

    The comfort.

    The lack of ipod connection.

    Mitsubishi FTO

Best: The head turning ability, the speed is there if I want it, the roar off the V6 when I hit Mivec.

Worst: It's not a very nice car to drive for a long time, uncomfortable and noisy. Not exactly refined on the road. MPG is bollocks for a 2 litre.

    Integra Type R..

    Best things:

Handling... actually driving for miles and miles seaching for that perfect stretch of bends and hoping they'll never come to an end.
Handling + Vtec... All of the above, but with the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, and a big stupid smile on your face. :D
MPG... Pottering about not in Vtec is pretty cheap too, seems to be a miser on juice when driven sensibly.
Looks.. Not everyone's cup of tea, but everything is purposeful! :) You know you have nice car when you can't walk past it without looking at it!

    Bad things:

    Insurance...
Looks... are not everyone's cup of tea. Like I really give two sh1ts about a spoiler on the back when my engine is singing to me and I feel like I'm on rails going around any corner I like!

Either way, I'll never sell it!

You're all doing it wrong. The op asked about best and worst gadgets.

    Car: passat

Best: a plastic windscreen holder for pay and display tickets.

    God that car is boring

Worst: electronic handbrake that won't disengage if not wearing seatbelt, never ending seat belt warning ping if you put your shopping on the passenger seat

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭jclally

BMW 316. Best thing - Cruise control. Worst thing - the oil thats dripping out of it despite three visits to the garage and €1200(and counting) worth of work

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭barone

    glanza starlet

best gadget.. retractable mirrors (essential for shopping centres)
worst thing... cup holders are too near headunit, big cup wont fit

    punto mk1

good things - parts very cheap, lots of spare part for sales
bad thing - keep broken on regular basis .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭illegalpower

    Mondeo

    Best
Quick clear front windscreen. Excellent In the winter
    Worst
Wipers. When they are set to interval mode there's a loud tick everyone they operate so you can imagine how annoying it becomes when it's set to the shortest interval. It's like being on countdown

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭Joe10000

    Landrover Discovery

Best is the ride, extremely comfortable.

Worst is the on road handling, point the steering wheel and hope for the best.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,975 ✭✭✭W.Shakes-Beer

    Astra Bertone Coupe

Best: Surprisingly good mpg from the 1.8, fairly quick, not overly common, responsive handling and its comfort.

Worst: Access to clean rear window from inside!

    MG ZT

One thing is really annoying, press open and only the drivers door unlocks, have to hit it a 2nd time to open the other doors. I find this a huge pain in the hole. The heated rear screen also comes on automatically in a way I can't understand, some morning it comes on when it's 10degC+, not a huge thing but I still turn it off.

No actual gadget I really love, it has most stuff, cruise, climate control etc etc etc.

As a car, it's my favourite car yet and I like every spin I have in it.

As another person had mentioned, could people please read the f ing OP before posting sh1t about mpg, comfort and engine noise etc :pac: This is like marking leaving cert English papers for a pack of slow bastads, answer the question folks, if ye want a chat ring the Samaritans :P

    BMW 520 2.2 Petrol M-Tech E39

Best - Places to rest your elbows on both sides when driving. Handy to have the little computer too, gives MPG, Temperature outside, Miles left from tank, Average speed. Just nice to have these things.

Worst - Very fragile cup holders in front, both broken.Other than that I cant think of anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭Admldj

    saab 9-5

best gadgets , the cool as hell cup holder, the fact someone had to engineer that amazes me! the double sun visors so you can put one at the side and one in front and the heated seats (lovely on a cold morning):)

the bad, need the fan belt changed the squeal when i start it up is actually embarrasing:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭TrailerBob

    03 Landcruiser- old shape.

Best - low range gearbox, its unstoppable. Electric foldy-in mirrors too, surprisingly useful.

Worst - centre console is too low to rest left elbow on.

Think that's the only complaint I have about it..... (even does 30 mpg!:pac:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

    Ford mondeo 98"

Best: it cheap as chips and gets me to work for 1/4 of the price I payed before.

Worst: it's the most boring and dullest bucket I ever sited in my life.

The turbo and paddleshifts. Feel like a complete child driving it. Heated seats too, love those.

Hate the sound system, despite it being a premium version, it's pants. Ripping it all out next weekend and putting in a discreet install.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Ferris

    200sx

Best: lack of rear end grip

Worst: lack of rear end grip

Actually a great car, makes getting out of bed in the morning easier.

    No Skyline anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

    Astra Sri

There's a perfectly angled foot plate next to the clutch to rest your foot on that really makes any journey easier and a clever little slider thing in the glovebox that reveals a vent to cool the glovebox or heat it up with the clim.control

Storage in the front is piss poor

    E39 525i Sport Individual

Best Gadget: Headuint (radio / 6 CD / tape / Sat Nav / OBC / TV)
Worst gadget: erm, erm, erm, eh the invisible clutch pedal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

Auto dimming rear view mirror and electric folding mirrors would be my favourites!

And how many cars have different sounds for the indicators to tell you whether it's the left indicator or the right indicator that is on :pac:!

I hate the lack of cruise control and the extreme dullness of my car!

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭jenizzle

Mazda RX8 Exclusive (therefore, looooads of gadgets!)

    - One really cool feature is if you unlock the car, but don't get into it, it'll lock itself after a minute or two.
    - Electric sunroof
    - The button that opens the boot from the remote

    The worst?
    - The radio. Sure, the Bose system is awesome, but I'm limited to CDs and the radio. It won't even play .mp3 CDs.
    - The cup holder is under the armrest, thus totally useless
    - The orange 'low fuel' light that seems to be constantly on :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

    535d
    Best - Torque
Worst - current reading on the odometer 155k kms and climbing quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

    Focus:

    Best: QuickClear Windscreen

Worst: Driver window doesnt go up with one press up (Even my 04 pug did it :()

    BMW 330d Msport

Best gadgets: Xenons with Adaptive headlights that turn around bends and seems to throw the beam further the faster you go, automatically switch dip/high as required(well 90% of the time...)

Voice control of the phone..once you get the numbers programmed in, great fun/frustration was had trying to get it to understand me

Worst : the alarm 'Bong' if you run low on fuel or say water in the washer and you haven't got around to filling up, every time you start the car it has to go 'bong' - very annoying

    Seven Worlds will Collide

    Golf GTD

    Best:
-Fantastic touch screen sat nav/hard drive for tunes/phone setup

    Worst:
-Driving position not 100% comfortable, there's something slightly off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

    Edit:
Delete - Forgot the actual OPs question.

    Best/worst quirky gadgets?

    Audi A5
Best: Auto lights, wipers. Tyre pressure warning & nice in-dash screen
Worst: No seatbelt height adjustment - crazy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

    VW T3 Syncro

    BEST:
100% perfect driving position, the view all round, opening front quarterlights (poor mans AC), the permanent 4WD with difflocks, acres of space

    WORST:
The complete lack of any gadgets whatsoever, 69 hp :o

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

    Mitsubishi Mirage Asti RS

Best - heating (Its what I get for buying a car that comes with no electronics or creature comforts)

Worse - F**k all sound deadening, so so loud.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,680 ✭✭✭mondeo

    Audi a6:

    It's comfy and always starts.

The Bad thing is I never fell in love with it, dunno what I'm driving it for:(. Going to flog it soon for an E class.

    Volvo C30 SE.

Best gadgets: Xenons, heated seats and Keyless Go are pretty nice too.

Worst (not so gadget like): The cabin filter requires all the connectors from the fuse tray in the passenger footwell to be removed, then the tray and finally the mounting brackets for the tray. Took me an hour to do it and I needed a chiropractor afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,971 ✭✭✭teednab-el

    Audi A4 2000

Best: ECU display, leather interior and general looks.

Worst: Radio head-unit and speaker system ( I hate it) , Alarm system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

    BMW E36 320i
Pro - very reliable, always starts etc.
"Gadget" - sunroof I guess, love it.

Con - rattles from this and that place, wind noise from windows.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,142 ✭✭✭shamwari

    Mk2 Punto:

Best: Nippy, very very economical, handles well, girly button to lighten the steering (handy when you've a dodgy arm!). Easy car to service and work on.

Worst: I'm called a liar when I tell people it is very very reliable.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Mahuga

    Ford Focus 2.0TDCi

Best: Effortless performance and cheap running costs.

    Worst: Road and suspension noise.

    cough cough

This had the potential to be a really class thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭ION08

    Golf GTI mk4

    Best:

    - I like how the washer jets spray water mist evenly over the entire windscreen

    - Remapped to 200bhp and 225lb torque ... so I love the looks on VTEC drivers faces, mainly skangers, when they come right up to my rear bumper lookin for a race and get left behind - love the facial expression as realisation hits them that their 1.6 "DOCK VEETEK" isn't the fastest machine to ever hit the road as the majority of them seem to think

-Really good sound quality from the OEM speakers

    Worst:

    - Totaly standard apart from remap so handling is fairly soft
    - The thick fabric Recaro seats seem to gather a lot of dust

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

The thing I love about my car is the stereo. But that's because i upgraded it...Aldi player! Bluetooth, all my music, handsfree, USB stick and SD card reader. Tonnes of music.

Bad points: There's no toys at all. And the actual Radio part of my stereo sucks!

    Had an RX-8 before...

The coolest feature by far is the way it beeps when you hit the redline but it still lets you go that little bit further :D

also the way the wing mirrors automatically heat up when you turn on the rear window de-mister

PS. most cars automatically lock themselves again if you dont get into them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,106 ✭✭✭✭TestTransmission

Honda Accord Euro R CL7 (for a few more days)

Best Parts:Fold in wing mirrors and launch control ;)

    Worst:Jap radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 873 ✭✭✭spiggotpaddy

best thing is the remote window opening on our scorching hot summer days.

worst thing, people ranting on about the size of the big phucking boot.

    octy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭high horse

E46 M-Sport touring, loaded with extras like xenons, leather, auto lights and wipers

Best: The glass in the boot can open separate from the boot, might not seem like much but its very handy

Worst: The car automatically locks itself every time I go above 10mph which is fine for me as I'm used to it but passengers almost break the door handles trying to open a door they didn't realise was locked

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭squod

    Mondeo Diesel Mk3

Best thing is it's built in anti-theft mechanism. No tracksuit in his right mind takes a diesel mondeo on a joyride.

Worst thing is the lovely fly-wheel gamble game you can play. It's a bit like monopoly when you land on the chance squares. Got stuck with a large bill last week so I did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,552 ✭✭✭dylbert

    Toyota Altezza,

Best - Stereo, great sound quality and the speakers can handle allot of volume and bass.

Worst - Rear seats don't fold flat.

    '02 Laguna 2, 1.8 Auto.

Pro: Goes well. Nice and smooth. Looks classy. Comfy thing. Real comfy thing. Well equipped. Didn't pay for it.

Con: Drinks go juice. That Reputation. The amount of idiots who insist on reminding me of that.
