    Hi,

I'm tempted to buy a set of these kettlebells at a total cost of €112.00 including delivery - http://www.buykettlebelldublin.com/node/622

I do intend to eventually buy a squat rack and olympic weights set but I supposed there'd be no harm in having these as well :D

I've never done kettlebells before but a friend has a DVD that I could borrow (dunno why he has the DVD and no kettlebells - I think he bought it in America with the intention of buying kettlebells when he got back).

    What are your thoughts on:
    • Whether I should really get a 16kg one; and
    • Whether it would make sense to add a kettlebell workout on Saturdays for someone who currently works out Mon/Wed/Fri or whether it could be too much

It really depends what you intend using them for? If you've never used kettlebells before it's a heavy weight(s) to start learning technique with.

    Hello

I guess it really depends what you want to achieve out of this..Prob better to do a bit every day with 2 days off. This way it will be more spread over your week and you will be able to combine different workouts.

Otherwise go to a gym and get an instructor to advise you the best options according to your body capabilities.

Enjoy and best of luck :)

I wouldnt try to learn kettlebell technique from a dvd, your form could be all over the place and you wouldnt know. Id suggest going to a few classes at first so you can learn the moves right. That set is perfect for starting deadlifts and swings but maybe heavy at first for things like jerks. Depends on your current strength. But you will build up strength really quickly and prob find a 16 a bit light eventually, but you can double up to 32 :)

Totally agree. There are little intricracies involved in each technique that can make all the world of difference. For example, most beginners when doing a kettlebell swing use way too much shoulder (like an swinging anterior raise), when it actually the snapping action of the hips which do the vast majority of the work.

You need someone giving you feedback, telling you what you're doing right and wrong. I highly recommend checking out Dave Hedges' kettlebell classes at Wild Geese MMA (http://www.wildgeesema.com/kettlebell.html).

Unfortunately, I can't attend those classes as I'm from the metropolitan area of Donegal :D

I have found classes nearby that are on Mon/Wed/Fri for 5 euro a go so I may give those a shot before making any purchases. At least then, I'll know whether I need to go lighter.

Kettlebell moves are *so* tricky to master! definitely do some classes before trying it at home as you'll do yourself an injury ...

I've never used KB's but IMO less weight with better technique is preferable to the alternative.
