    Hi

A friend of mines daughter is twenty years old and is currently completing a Fetac Level 5 course in FAS. She hopes to go back to college as a mature student to study Law.

But I have recently heard ( dont know weither it is true or not ) that when she completes this course she can apply to colleges such as Maynooth College etc to study Law. But I always thought you had to wait to go back as a Mature student?? Is this true ?

She is currently looking at doing another fetac 5 course which says when she completes that course she go into maynooth college to study social studies. But she is only twenty one years old, does this apply to her ???

If anyone could help me with this I would be so grateful :)
    Thanks

You can apply through the CAO to colleges, using your FETAC results. Certain courses in certain colleges reserve places for FETAC students, but the number is usually very low and extremely competitive to get into. Age does not make a difference.

Being a mature student is a different route e.g. there may be an interview involved and a short course to be completed. As a mature student, she would be entitled to a grant and benefits, but I wouldn't know the detail on that. It may be easier to gain access to the course this way.

Why is she doing another FETAC Level 5 course? She wouldn't be progressing in her education and this usually prevents a person getting grants.

You have to be 23 (I think it is 23 on the 1st January of the year you apply) to be a mature student. Under 23 you need LC or Fetac cert. A cert is calculated as points by CAO and the max you can get is 400 for 8 distinctions. If that is enough for Law, and if the college accepts Fetac certs then you might get in.

Agree with deemark that there doesn't seem to be a lot of point doing another fetac course unless its a level 6. There is every chance she could use the course she has done to apply for social studies.

certain colleges will let you in with a FETAC level 5. You have to look it up, it will usually be on the prospectus or on the website, they will want certain specific courses, and a certain amount of distinctions in some subjects.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but looking for some info.

I went to college straight after doing the leaving cert as most do but I left after a few months I was 18 then. I've been working on and off for last two years but want to go back to college and get some proper qualifactions etc next year(Sep 2013).

I'll be 21 then, do I just apply to the cao like I did when in school or were do I apply?

    Thanks for any replies.
