    Dubbie,
Forget renting land. If money is tight, the idea of renting is out of the question.

You'll have to ask around. You are in a tough position - you need the permission to get the deer caliber, but don't have permission, correct?

Get out there are make yourself known. Talk to a few farmers. You may find one that desperately needs your services.

I bet if you asked 10 farmers for permission and volunteered your time to: take care of foxes, shoot birds destroying crops, or just help around the farm on occasion, you would find one that would be willing to help you out.

as fisma said, get your ass out there and press the flesh, you would be surprised how willing most farmers are.

first thing you need to do is find the rifle you want and put a deposit on it.
you will need the caliber if the rifle ie. .243, 6.5x55, .270, .308. or what ever you decide is right for you there are plenty out there.

also once you have the caliber chosen you need to pick a suitable grain weight bullet for that caliber that is appropriate for deer.
    ie. .243 might like a 100gr bullet 6.5x55 - 140gr bullet .270 - 130gr and .308 - 150gr. that is just an example there are loads to choose from

so now you have met some farmers that have deer on their land and have given you permission by way of signing a permission slip that you have prepared, on that slip you will need the farmers name and address, his folio number, how many acres he has and his phone number.

with this you can apply for your license,

look up the N.P.W.S website and download an application and fill in the details accordingly .

you attach the permission slips to the application and enter your rifle details where it asks you to.

so lets say you went with makers name tikka- caliber .243-serial number of the rifle - bullet weight 100gr sp

now send the application back to the address on the application

    deer hunting application
the national parks and wildlife service
    main street
    ballyboy
    co monaghan
    0429748748

    best of luck

ps. copy everything and keep it especially when dealing with the gards they seam to be able to loose things on a whim so its best to have a back up

Please take up the advise to speak to farmers. Deer control is an ongoing problem for most of us and any help by reasonable, responsible people is always welcome. Don't go down the route of offering money straight away as this may actually put farmers off, offer to walk around the land to get a feel for it, check with the farmer about whether you can bring dogs with you or even just how many people you have with you when shooting, let the farmer know when you intend shooting in advance. Keep and eye out on the farm for broken fences and other problems areas and let the farmer know. Offer to help with vermin control etc. The occasional progress report helps keep communications going also as does the occasional offer of perhaps a pheasant for example, for the pot. That's how it has worked for us and we've built up a solid relationship with hunters on the land here, some for over 20 years.
Oh and don't be put off by someone refusing you. We all have bad days. Calmly point out some of the benefits you can bring to the land/farm and who knows, next time you see that farmer, you may get a different response.
    Get on it lad!!

Guys, if you know anyone who is organizing a cull I would be interested in buying any excess deer that they have, we offer cash on delivery 1.5 per kg for neck/head shots and 1.2 for chest shots, depending on numbers we can also collect, if you wouldn't mind passing the word on that would be great, happy hunting!!

The HCAP is well worth doing, lots to learn from it. I wouldnt rule it out completely, even in the long run you should look at it.
