just wondering if anyone had any recent experience of vrt'ing one of these creatures, done the research thru the revenue site, and know the documents required/booking in procedure thru the nct etc. etc.
just wondering what they are charging. A sales receipt is not a problem and i believe if i'm taking it up correctly if i can provide a number of examples of similar models currently for sale they will take an average as a guide on which they base the max 36% vrt. ouch ouch ouch.
this is what i was more or less expecting until a conversation earlier in the week whereby someone is adamant a (LHD) cossie was brought in for approx €700 as was a lancia integrale. this person told me that there is a flat rate over a certain age. I was aware of the €50 / over 30yr old situation. anyways prob 2 good 2 b true but now i'm curious.

A quick search tells me that there is a 25% reduction in VRT for LHD cars. Nothing about a flat rate though......

Only on appeal will you get to present other similar cars to them to prove your case.
Its silly but you will just have to pay whatever they come up with.

Could you not send "this person" in to VRT the car ?

Armed only with a cheque for €700.;)

its pretty unfair, prepared to pay but a few grand that you might as well flush down the toilet is a bitter pill. they're worth less here than the uk imo except you have a better choice and its important to find an unabused example.

Could be anything really, chap in the paper a few weeks back was told by Revenue he could be looking at VRT of €15,000+ on a 1992 Escort Cosworth, thread over here about it:

saw that thread, and its been quoted on other forums too, now that really is sheer lunacy. ah the whole thing is frustrating. i will pay the vrt and i suppose i'm expecting in excess of 2k on an 88 sapphire. thats like a figure plucked from thin air as would not be recouped if i sold the car afterwards, gotta take it on the chin i spose

I'm not aware of a flat rate for cars over a certain age (less than 30) but there is a minimum rate of either €720 / €780.

Pure madness alright but fair play to your man for not taking it lying down and going to the papers about it. Just really goes to show how ****ed up the system is, don't think he would get away with €100 in the sunvisor at the NCT centre when it comes to a cheap VRT fee :p

As for the appeal system, from what I have been reading and hearing that too is a farce, can't see the Revenue being nice with you and giving you back "x" amount when you first have to pay the full original sum

Good luck with the car :)

There was a convo going on here last wek in the dreamers' thread saying Escort Cossie's could easily sell for €15k if mint. I called shenanigans but was proven wrong. Still think that's mental money for any Cossie!

On a side note friend of mine bought an '06 S8 in '08 for £60k. VRT alone was €35k. Car stood him €100k in total - sold it today for under €30k! :(

That's the money they go for here at the moment, €10k - €18k. What's even better is that the Revenue seem to think they are worth more, they are valuing my brothers Cossie at €40k when built and VRT of €15k to be paid

I've only recently been educated on that and I still don't comprehend. I can understand paying big money for an E30 M3 or Integrale, to me they are 'special' cars where a Sierra or Escort Cossie are nice machines but not in the same league IMO.

I'm more in to classic suff myself and while I see what should be €40k muscle cars going for €18k at the moment I just can't justify paying as much as €10k for a Cossie. More, if you're bringing them in you'll have to VRT which is big money (and the subject of this thread) while anything pre 1980 only costs €200 to register and €48 a year to tax. It just doesn't add up!

For reference: I went to clear a 1994 Delta Integrale Evo 2 in 2009 & they wanted EUR6.5k to clear it.

You'll pay significant money - relative to the value of it - to clear a cosworth.

Some of them are considerably more valuable than others. The big money ones are:

1/. 3 door Sierra Cosworths - particularly ultra rare RS500's (STG£40k for a good one).
2/. Escort Cosworth - Big turbo models with leather in standard spec.

Funnily enough the Sapphire 4 door models in both 2wd and 4wd don't make big money.

Let me try re-educate you :)

How much a car is worth depends on the meeting point of supply and demand. There are very few decent cossies still around (supply is low) and there is a very strong following of Fords on these islands (demand is strong), so strong demand fights over a tiny supply => price some of these demanders is willing to pay is very, very high.

If you're neither a Ford fan nor an economist, this is hard to comprehend :D
