Man I'm looking forward to this competition later in 2011.
This promises to be an epic event - my money is on the USA to kick butt in Dublin!
I've been out to Kileen on a few occasions - good course I believe but it's a real shame its now not being developed as planned. Perhaps some new investment will come forward after the Cup.
All you guys going out there for a few days?
Wow its really impressive given that Dublin also hosted the Ryder Cup just a few years ago - ye guys must have some real contacts if you know what I mean
I'm planning on setting up a facebook page for this event and will post the link in the near future. Hopefully ye all will post pics, stories etc.
Maybe we can organise a boards.ie golf meeting out there - how about that moderators??

    keep it real,
    Tom

Like you I can't wait. It's going to be EPIC man.

I hope they put on a big concert with U2, Bon Jovi and Jedward to mark the event.

Played Killeen a few times too. Nice course, flat in places but most of Kildare is flat in fairness.

Killeen Castle is a monster MAN! Can't wait to see the ladies go to town on that bad boy. Grip it and rip it girls.

    Keep it real dude.

Dont get me started on your infamous county boundaries here in Ireland!!
Once when travelling on the freeway to Cork I think I entered County Tipperary 3 times! Heck I thought I was an extra on Groundhog Day lol

    Sure its County Meath
Did ye guys have some live events for the Ryder Cup? Man I'd kill to see Bono and the Edge out there rocking the castle. Highly unlikely though!!

Had forgotten it was on. Still underwhelmed. Ladies golf just lacks something for some reason. Not a patch on the Ryder Cup. Unfair, but that just the way it is.

Unfortunately, very unlikely. If anything it is likely being kept up just because of the Solheim and more likely to go backwards after it. It has no special feature and the Solheim being held there wont bring it anything. K Club with greater advantages got no partiuclar bounce - and that was with the Ryder Cup.

I don't think either USA or Europe have any outstanding players on their tours at the moment.
The USA tour is dominated by Asian players while the European tour has what I would rate second division players, given that the top Europeans play on the US tour where the better prize money is ten timesbetter and more events are staged.
I attended a European Ladies Tour event a few years ago in Spain and only a few hundred attended each day, including final day.
The Ladies European Tour don't market the tour properly. To be honest I can't even name more than half a dozen players in Europe's top 20 Order of Merit. Laura Davies, Trish Johnson, Janice Moodie, Karen Koch, Melanie ????, and that' s about it. No Aneka Sorenstam or other top players.
So, I can't see thousands of fans flocking to Killeen Castle for the Solheim Cup unless there is a drastic improvement in the marketing/PR of the event in the coming months.
They will need to have a free admission policy to attract people.
Although I play golf regularly, women's golf has none of the attraction of the men's game.
Ireland with all its history of men's amateur and professional golf, has never really produced top class women players, since Mary McKenna.
We have a few ladies playing professionally on the European Tour but none have made their mark.
Sorry to be so negative but roddy carr will have a job promoting this one.
And no Irish players will qualify for the European team.

Sums it up perfectly, I can't see KC lasting til the end of the year, their cost base is just too high.

I thought exactly like this until I saw the Solheim event in 2009. The Solheim Cup unexpectedly dragged my emotions to the surface in the same way the Ryder Cup did so I'm really looking forward to it this year. Roddy Carr won't need to promote as much as you think, alot of homeowners already know it's coming and are supplying their houses as Solheim Cup Accommodation www.accommodationfortheevent.com/solheimcup/

    Doubt it.

My club keeps sending me emails from our "Solheim Cup Ambassador." Pitiful really, they really are desparate for a crowd, which they won't get.

I know times are very tough for most of us but this type of thing makes me feel a bit sick. Maybe I am reading the ad wrong but it looks like someone is looking for €9500 for the use of a 3 bedroomed semi for the duration of the Solheim Cup?? That's probably 10% of the property's value! It was worse during the ryder cup in Kildare. And people wonder why visitor numbers from the US are down.

Im marshalling at it lads cant wait :)

I marshalled at the British Ladies Open in Lythm when it was sponsored by Weetabix.
Have to say I enjoyed the week.
Crowds averaged about 10,000 a day over the four days.
However, I cannot see 10,000 people going to Killeen. They will be lucky to get a couple of thousand.
It was okay bussing people to the Ryder Cup in the KClub, Co. Kildare, but the same logistics strategy won't work with the Solheim Cup. It just doesn't have the appeal, nor the personalities nor players.
How many subscribers reading this topic can name more than five top US and European contenders for a place on their respective teams?
Reading the gold columns of the national papers and listening to sports programmes on radio and there isn't a mention of the event.
If there was one or two Irish players in the team, maybe it would generate more enthusiasm and interest, but as far as I know, the top ranked players in the world won't be there as they are neither American nor European. And that's the problem.
People are not going to travel to Killeen, Co. Meath if it means having to park in Dublin and take a bus.
Being in Ireland they should have hosted the event on an established links course like Portmarnock.
But these inland courses with money behind them got the event and now we are in a recession it doesn't seem like it is going to work.
I hope it does. But I just can't see thousands of people thronging the fairways.

Laura Davies, Michelle Wie, Anika Sorenstam, Vivien Saunders, Nancy Lopez, Muffin Spencer Devlin, Babe Zaharias, the list goes on.

(BTW, should they not change it to Europe v Korea ? Or better still, Japan v Korea ?)

I think the Solheim Cup deserves a bit more attention to some of the facts, so I have taken a look at the current standings.

I guess one of the reasons why there seems to be very little interest here in Ireland is that there are no Irish actually playing in it. Also, the European women are not doing very well at the moment. Looking at the world ranking, I can only find 22 Europeans in the top 150, 8 in top 50 and 1 in top 10. (Where are the Irish women in Golf, has there been no effort in making sure at least one Irish girl plays on the team??)

On the other side (USA), they have 24 in the top 150, 9 in top 50 and 2 in top 10. So they are doing so well either, and I guess as long as all the best golfers in the world are not involved it does not get as much attention, as for example the Ryder Cup...(7 of the top 10 golfers in the world will not take part). But they do have Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Brittany Linicicome for the sore eye ;)

One other problem is that the Americans have totally dominated this competition, and they should be big favorites this year as well

As a Norwegian (in Ireland) I will definitely be up at Killeen Castle in September. Suzann Pettersen (ranked 2nd in the world) will lead the troops, in a tournament named after another famous Norwegian; Karsten Solheim. Just hope the weather will be better than we had at the K-Club..

Now, I just want to get a game there myself as I haven't had the chance to play it yet :D

According to LPGA the Solheim Cup attracts on average 100,000 attendees and is expecting above average numbers this year.

10000 per competition day, 50000 total, would be a decent figure I think. More if entry is free or a token amount. But thats sorta cheating. Are ticket prices for single days available yet? Ireland is poor these days. Ask the FAI or IRFU about Irish sports fans not forking out fancy ticket prices anymore. I doubt the LPGA is up to speed on such local economics.

Haha jesus I was wondering when they were going to come to their senses. If they didn't drop the prices I would imagine the local attendance would be low. TBH thats still too much for me. 30e max I would pay for one day. Thats around what I originally thought it would cost when I looked at the website and they were still 250e. It's left a bad taste in my mouth still don't think I will go. :(

€50 for singles on Sun day seems ok TBH. matches will be spread out so you shouldnt have much difficulty in following the action. Great spectating occasion -and from personal experience its much better watching the ladies play as they are limited in how far they can hit the ball.

Actually there's a few more threads, most complaining(rightly) about the price of tix.

So you're watching this on TV? If the cheers are really loud when Europe wins a hole then the crowds are good. If there's a few intermittent claps then not so good.

BTW, anyone with a sky package but not sky sports can watch this and the tour championship this weekend for free. Sky Sports channels free from 6am tomorrow until 6am monday(afaik).

Attendances are good so far ,17k yesterday, over 20k today.

Watching on tv it looks a diabolical viewing course it must be said, the ropes are miles back from the fairways and alot of greens and tees are inaccessible.

Cristie Kerr has had to pull out of her Singles match through injury, giving Karen Stupples a walkover... I know this is rare, but I've always wondered why Ryder/Solheim Cup teams or Seve Trophy teams etc don't bring a substitute or substitutes? Why not select a 'non-playing' team member who travels with the team and plays only in the case of injury?

They've just mentioned on Sky Sports that the teams do have 'stand-by players' but they can only be called up when before the even begins - ie, before Friday in this case... Kind of ridiculous really - what if a player got injured on the first day (thinking of McIlroy hitting the tree root a few weeks back or something like that) and couldn't play the rest of the week? Competition would be ruined really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

Apparently there is a sub who must be used before Friday, not at the weekend..

Competition would be ruined really.

    Oii!!:D
