Protein Drink - help

    Hi there,

I am a girl in my 30's and in the last year I have started an exercise regime (better late than never!).

I do a bootcamp class 2 days a week (45 mins each) and am starting backing kickboxing in a few weeks (2 evenings a week - 1 hr each) I also do the odd day in the gym (walking on treadmill for 30 mins and weights).

I eat very little protein, in fact no meat at all and very little fish and I am wondering if it would be benefical to drink the odd protein drink? Would it help or would I need to be doing alot more weights in order to benefit?

If you would recommend one, which one as I don't want to put on weight or bulk up.

    Many Thanks :)

I wont recommend one but would advise trying samples of a few before buying a big tub. I had to throw out half of a tub because it was too heavy on my tum and made me sick.

Seems like you're not getting enough protein naturally through meat unlees you eat lots and lots of nuts:D so I'd say definatly go for it.Stay away from USN it's way overpriced and I personally don't like the taste.I use EAS 100% whey which is pretty cheap and it tastes nice...strawberry yummy:P

Nuts are a secondary protein, they need to be combined with another protein for sufficient amino acid chains.

Plus they are a fat source, not a protein source, the fat content out weighs the protein by too much to be a suit primary source of protein (on top of being incomplete as gs said above)

I've found Syntha 6 to be pretty good although as Oryx said, you are best off trying a few samples as I've noticed some brands have different effects on me. Look for a protein mix for lean muscle mass ad opposed to bulking up or a weight gainer.
That said it'd be worthwhile incorporating some read meat, eggs or chicken into your diet.

You certainly cant go wrong with adding some extra protein to your diet. Obviously if you can get it by making some changes to your diet that would be better but protein drinks are a quick/easy way of getting some.

Holland and Barret quite often do some very good sales on their supplements and their own brand is actually very nice.

    This http://www.ironscience.co.uk/proteinpowder/wheyproteinconcentrate.html

MyProtein have good protein but too expensive unless you can have it delivered to Northern Ireland.

They're £37.95 for 4.5kg and Iron Science delivery to Ireland is £14.89 - this is for one pack. If you buy 3 * 4.5kg, the shipping costs the same and you get a free pack of creatine.

Shipping is free for orders over £200 and MT5 is a 5% discount code.

Ive been living on this for a long time now. Low in carbs, good protein. You only need one scoop (for us girls!) any more its too heavy. Tastes yum; coconut/vanilla/choc etc. I get a discount in the shop but maybe you can sweet talk the guys into giving one to you as well. Theyre dead sound. Its just down from trinity, next to o'briens.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replys !!:D

To be honest I have no idea what USN, EAS or Syntha 6 are!! lol I really have NO clue about this sort of stuff.

Dolee - Yummm coconut sounds fab!! where abouts is that place near Trinity? Not sure I know O'Briens??

A friend of mine recommended Maximuscle - seemingly there's one for recovery instead of bulking up (low carb?) comes in a few flavours too. Anyone any take on this brand and/or taste?

No chance of me eating meat :D its been nearly 20 years since I last tried it!! haha. I do eat the odd egg and a few prawns but no where near enough to get in a protein fix. I'm still in agony from Saturdays workout so need to start on something...lol

    Hi op,
It's on Westmorland st. Just head towards o Connell bridge and it's on the left hand side. Next to o briens the sandwich bar?! It looks a bit intimidating in there but the lads are sound and will give you all the advice u need. They're well used to it.

I recommend overcoming the egg thing and start eating more. I was like you, I still won't eat meat but these days eggs and egg White omelettes are keeping me alive! You only need one whole egg and 2/3 whites. U can get a carton of whites, free range in Dunnes next to the milk/juices. Then maybe try stick a few prawns in there too! Loads of green veg and you're set :)

    Good luck!

Don't go for Maximuscle. The products are good but WAAYY overpriced - you're paying for all their marketing. A standard, high-protein whey will be low carb. For example, this one only has 2.5g per serving of carbs. If you have a friend that's also ordering you can split the delivery.

MyProtein's is lower carb again here.

However, myProtein is expensive for Irish delivery now so, unless you can get it delivered to the North (I do this as I work in the North), I'd go for ironscience.

The myprotein whey isolate is actually very nice. i've been using Optimum Nutrition for a good long while and only tried the MP protein recently. It's great stuff.

What flavor did you go for? I am thinking of getting the natural and getting a couple of their flavouring systems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

I got the unflavoured one. I got the chocolate flavouring drops too.

Tastes really nice, but you've to be careful of how many drops you put in, it can become very sweet.

Ah great, that's good to hear, I am doing low carb and I think the flavour drops will be handy to have a change and to also use for low carb ice cream and stuff.

Used to really like the ON strawberry one, but switched to Kinetica as it was available in my gym, have to say it made me feel sick, very heavy on the stomach and put me off shakes. Must get more ON stuff

They also do a FlavDrops bundle where you get one of each here.

It'd be handy if you know someone getting the same because you could take a few each and swap as you like.

Have you ever ordered off myProtein before? If not, feel free to use my discount code which will get you 5% off - MP289427.

Thanks marathonic, that bundle is an idea as I was going to get two flavours anyway and thanks for the code too, will be my first time ordering from them
