The pic quality and lyp sync on TV3 now is awful and it was dire with VB last night, ie unwatchable. However it has been great fro ages apart from odd live footie but why so bad all of a sudden. Sky will love it as this will drive people back to them.

Is there a simple explanation that I missed ?

Asked the question earlier, if the mast replacement is underway - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=72300453

The contract was awarded last Sept for the replacement of the masts at Maghera and Mt Leinster - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=67827815

I'd expect interruption to services from both these transmitters, if mast replacement is underway, for some time into the future.

Jeez I would have thought that at this close to launch all the main transmitter upgrades would have been carried out by now.
Question: Are the modifications a taller mast or new antennae or both?

Got the answer from your earlier post.
This is crazy. Just yesterday I was thinking of removing my old VHF aerial ~ looks like I'm gonna have to leave the damn thing for another 2 years now unless they really fire up Mulla to the last:mad:

    1. I thought the 'new' Maghera was the higher one.
    2. TV3 was fine last night off Maghera but I am north of it

Wonder if Maghera is parallel running off 2 masts with a delay to the south pending removal of old mast ??

everything ok again and good to know about mast replacement.

Picture quality so good now any glitch is a major upset and to think we had analogue iffy for so many years. Roll on HD.

The existing mast is 147.5 meters high and planning permission was granted for a 160 meter high replacement (Clare Co Co planning number 09763)

You don't exactly need a big mast when you're already on top of a mountain.

Do these 'main' sites still make sense today? Are high powered DVB transmissions the new VHF?
    (pedants need not apply)

Probably cheaper than having all the low power masts too those yokes must cost a bomb just on electricity

DTT transmissions are lower powered when compared against equivalent UHF analogue coverage. Don't remember the figure.

Once RTÉNL publish the figures for the DTT sites and compare them against analogue from the same sites we'll have a better idea.

Ok so we know that digital in laymans language is broadcasting 1,s n 0,s but my question is how does anakogue work, explain in laymans language please??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 ennis34

So we know in laymans language that digital broadcasting is basically sending out computer code 1,s and 0, s over the air and ur mpeg4 basically makes sound and vision of it but my question is how does analogue work btw is it true that fm is going to stay with us

3 e on maghera? Ive never had it n im only about 8 miles or less as the crow flies from the mast

I have had 3e since last November not that I ever watch it. I have Digital TV and Radio from Maghera more or less constantly since April 2009. FM will not be interrupted by the Tv upgrade work and new mast ....save for the odd engineering outage.

Oh rite im still on analogue

Only an extra 13 metres higher than the old mast? It's a bit of a missed opportunity perhaps for better coverage around Lough Derg and Loughrea.

The UK main sites seem to use far higher masts more frequently, there's several over 300m high.

Probably couldnt go any higher due to shannon airport nearby and clare co.co. Probably wudnt allow it
