Problem with "hybrid" bike

Hey, so I recently got my bike back (Stolen, and it actually got back to me during the queens visit, they found it in the canal :D) but there's a few things wrong with it (I'm assuming from it being treated so well)

The main one is when I'm freewheeling the chain goes slack, and engages every so often. It's thrown me off twice since I got back on it, and is a right pain. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the chain, derailer or back wheel completely, and i don't know how to check. I'd like to do the work myself (both for the experience, and for economic reasons) if possible, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds as if the freewheel is acting up, which is probably from spending time in the canal. I imagine all parts of the bike require cleaning and relubrication after that. Was is submerged?

Do you know whether you have a freewheel or freehub?

That should help you figure out which, if you don't know already.

edit: Didn't notice you said that this only happens when freewheeling so Tomas is right, must really be the freewheel that's the problem.

If any part of the rear mech jams the bottom run of the chain will go slack and then stop.

It's possible that's it something as simple as the dolly wheels on the mech are full of gunk.

As Tomas said you should clean and lube everything on the bike. If you don't have any more specialised tools take a toothbrush to everything associated with the gears and brakes and clean all the crud off then re-oil.

If it was submerged you should take all the cables out of their plastic protection and drop in a bit of oil before putting them back. If there's water in there those cables will rust pretty quickly.
