Garrett Fitzgerald RIP. Was far too intelligent and good natured to be involved in the Irish political scene of the time.

RIP. I was never an FG supporter, but I think Garret Fitzgerald was genuine.

PS: Leo Varadkar won't have to put up with those boring Irish Times columns any more.

I was a kid when he was taoiseach so don't remember him as taoiseach too much but I liked his analysis on radio in recent times. He was the brains that public life is sadly short of.

Pity we don't have more like him

A very intelligent and decent man, a far cry from the typical politician we see today.

Hard to believe the likes of Bertie Ahern held the same office as a class act like Garret.

For his terms of office, he consistently inherited Fianna Fails mess from their previous terms.
No fault of his own, he did his best to each time, sort it out.
He was one of the very few in those eras that were of some sort of decency, honesty and open to the people.
He was approachable and very much liked, even by opposition.
Some could disagree with his political views but those that fully remember him, will do so with nothing but with the above characteristically in mind.

It was our honour to have you working for us. Your kind is missed.
Thank you for your service to your country Mr Fitzgerald. RIP.

Had the pleasure of chatting to him a few years back. An extremely knowledgeable man whose genuine interest in the betterment of Ireland made him a great "no bullshít" policitian. A sad loss. RIP

He most certainly was a decent man! Didn't get everything right, but didn't get it all wrong either. I think history will record him as a man who, no matter what tried to be the right thing by the country.

RIP Garret Fitzgerald, you'll always be a strong part in Irish history, and rightly so!

Probably our most admired politician in Europe and abroad.

Hard to believe he was so on top of his game during the last election only a few months ago.

It's said that when he left Aer Lingus it took two men and a computer to replace him.

Bumped into him a few times in Cineworld.

It's odd to think how someone so high in Irish politics was able to just mosey on around other people without a fuss, while in other countries you're always hearing about security details and such.

    RIP.

That's like when I found myself serving John Hume in a pub. He was very unassuming, queuing up at the bar like the other punters not pushing his way in or anything.

No that's very true, was just wondering! My Mam met him when they were running the Peace Train from Dublin to Belfast, and there was a project between Shankill Dublin and the Shankill road and she met him then too. She loved him!

A friend of mine in the labour party recently asked would he join and he said 'ah no - sure they're not left wing enough'

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I was only five when he last held the office, so needless to say I have no memories of him. But history records him well, the kind of man we need in office today. RIP Dr Fitzgerald.

I did not agree with everything he stood for with his recent support for NAMA being an example. However he was intelligent, honest, considered, gentle and in terms of his political integrity beyond reproach. Comparing him to his FF counterpart of the day, a certain CJ Haughey, well its like night and day really.

    RIP

I'm not an FG supporter, but he was a decent, intelligent, hard working man and was still an active respected political commentator right up until his recent illness. It's a shame to see him go, RIP Garret.

A truly great, intelligent politician. Watching those incompetant shiesters Biffo and Bertie at the state dinner last night, it made it all the worse that Garrett could not be there as he would have got the credit he deserved for his contribution towards the peace process starting in 1974 with the sunningdale agreement and the Anglo-Irish agreement of 1985. A great, great man. he will be sadly missed. RIP Garrett.

On AH we're always ripping politics and politicians to pieces. It gives a good idea from the respect shown here for him that he was a genuine worker for Ireland. RIP

    May he RIP.

It struck me this morning that from GF and Margaret Thatcher - two people that have loomed so large together in recent Anglo Irish relations and for wholly different reasons - one is now dead and one will surely be dead soon.

And that the way in which Anglo-Irish relations have been redefined in the last few days is a fitting tribute to a man that always approcahed the NI question with intelligence, subtlety and a lack of craw-thumping.

    RIP.

Not good to speak ill of the dead so I won't, however his political contributes were not universally positive, he dealt with some situations in a terrible way.

He seemed an intelligent and articulate man, even in his old age when he appeared on the election coverage. Seemed in good health then, shocking how someones health can decline so quickly. RIP.

my very first memory of becoming interested in politics was of Garret and Charlie debating on the Late Late Show - must have only been about 8 at the time but remember the sense of enormity that surrounded both these larger than life's lads duels.

RIP Garret - one of the truly great politicians of our lifetime.
