Assume I have a car which was first registered in October 2002.

It's due NCT in July 2012.

Now - according to NCTS website the new rule is as follows:
all cars presented for their 10th anniversary or subsequent NCT on or after 1st June 2011 will receive a certificate valid for up to one year only

If I go to NCT it in July 2012, will the certificate be valid until July 2013, or July 2014?

Please hence, that on July 2012, car will not be 10 years old yet, so that NCT is not it's 10th anniversary.

    .

That makes no sense: how do you have a car with a 'birthday' in October, and a test from July ?

Your test date should also be October.

You will only get one year as the car will be classed as 10 years old within that year

The car will be ten, they'll give a year cert. I'm in the same boat with my ZT, it's due in Aug 2012 and is a 2002 reg.

less than 3 months, only a 28 day February is 28 days which is 4 weeks, you won't get 3 38 day months consecutively so 12 weeks in not 3 months ;)

The age of the car is based on the date the test is due, not the actual age of the car.

You're trying to have your car tested early to get the 2 year cert, but it won't work :)

Sorry guys I made a lot's of confusion by not disclosing very important fact.

It's not an mistake. Car is due NCT in July 2012, and was first registered in October 2002.
The reason for it is, that the car was imported last year. According to current legislations, the car which is imported is due NCT on date of import, so if it was imported on July 2010, it was NCT'd then and now due NCT on July 2012.

That's why the whole case is a bit tricky, because the car at the moment when NCT is due, will be only 9 years and 9 months old.

To be exact it's 90 days, not 12 weeks.
and 180 days before first NCT.

Ah: you're bunched, then. 1 yr cert is all you'll get.

    That is a bit tricky!

An NCT has always been needed immediately when you import a car. In the past, the NCT would have been valid until the NCT of an identical (originally Irish) car would have been valid until. So in your case, your first NCT would only have been valid until October 2010!

    BUT

They changed the rules in the last year or two (don't know the exact details) and gave anyone 2 full years from the day of the test!!! That's what happened to you. I'd say you're in luck. Your actual due date is in July of next year and your car will not yet be 10 years old. You will get a 2 year certificate, I'm pretty sure about it!

There's some confusion on that one too! The NCT website shows that it is 3 months and 6 months (and not measured in days or weeks) but you have pointed to the legislation before where indeed it was 90 days and 180 days.

This directly affects me! My car is due 26/08/2011. Three months early means I can test it on 26/5 or 27/5 which suit me. The 90 day early rule means I can only test it on 28/5 - 31/5 to avail of the 2 year period (for my 12 year old car), but I'm out of the country then. I'll ring the NCT tomorrow and post back their reply!

Key word is the OR which mean either of the two.. car is not 10 years old is fine for two years but it's after 1st june 2011, which is the part that bring you down.. so you'll get 1 year

Edit: Disregard, just re-read and noted how wrong i was
