Instant Cure for Hiccups

Howdy! I had a bad dose of hiccups for the last three days. Not continuously, but on and off. Tried holding my breath, tried weird breathing techniques, drinking water, etc. Nothing helped. I looked it up on the Internet, and everywhere mentioned what I had already tried. I also read somewhere that swallowing a spoonful of honey will get rid of them, but I didn't pay much attention since I'd never heard it before.

I got them again though and also had bad enough heartburn, so, I went for the honey jar (to cure the heartburn, not the hiccups). To my surprise though, as soon as I swallowed a teaspoon of Manuka honey, the hiccups dissapeared instantly!

I put it down to coincidence or maybe even placebo, but I later got the hiccups again, and I thought I'd give it another try. As soon as I got them, I took another spoon of honey. Hiccups dissapeared instantly!

Today, my girlfriend's brother got the hiccups. I heard him complaining about them and how they wouldn't go away, so, I told him to try a spoon of honey. As soon as he had the honey swallowed, the hiccups dissapeared.

I found that fascinating and thought I'd share :)

Not sure if it will work with any honey, but it definitely does with Manuka honey.

Think it's fairly cheap in Aldi. A fiver I think for UMF 10+. If anyone wants to give it a try, I'd be very interested in hearing how it worked...

(Just remember, any kind of honey can be dangerous for infants)

Why is it dangerous for infants?

Must try that next time I get them. Nothing worse than hiccups on a night out.

Why oh why didn't you put this warning at the start? Junior's hiccoughs are gone but I think he's dying...

    ...and you're to blame.

    Google '2 girls 1 cup'.

Alternatively, check out this fun Maze Game to use up time while you wait for them to go away. Just make sure to keep the sound on, as the end music is fairly cool.

Breathing in deeply twice as soon as you get them works. Haven't had them in 6 months.

Stop breathing altogether and you'll never get them again

Haven't tried it OP, but i'd believe it. I was told to try a 2 teaspoons of sugar and let it melt in your mouth. Worked all but once when the hiccups were really bad. They're a bastard to get when you're drinking.

Drinking water from a cup on the opposite side works. It sounds ridiculous but it works every single time!!

Probably something to do with some sort of conspiracy (check the op's posts).

A pint of water upside down does it for me every time.

    Smokers will understand this.
You walk out of a warm pub into the cold air for a smoke and you get hiccups.
Go back inside, grab a pint of water (no ice) from the bar and head to the jacks.
Bend down and drink it. Works every time, but there is some spillage. That's why you go into the jacks.

If you dip a slice of lemon in sugar and suck it for a few seconds it cures hiccups.

Unless you are a moron the following always works, I can't believe it isn't common knowledge at this stage. Breath in (not a big gulp, just a handy one) and while holding your breath swallow three times.Do not open your mouth to take in air to help with the next swallow. Then just get on with your business. Twice will not work, you have to properly swallow (your spit, essentially)
You end up having held your breath for maybe ten seconds.

This just works, no need for homemade concoctions or crazy stuff like hopping on one foot backwards around an Ash tree while slapping your @rse.

That's what I do, works for me.

I learned it in the pub, thought it was a wind up but couldn't believe it worked!

I'm sure it looks ridiculous as well, puring water against the back of your head

No, I don't work for Aldi. I don't even shop there :) I prefer Lidl, but AFAIK, they don't sell Manuka honey.

As for the question about infants and honey, it's botulism (as someone has already stated).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botulism

And UMF is Unique Manuka Factor. Manuka honey is very unique in that the plant it comes from only grows in New Zealand. It's reported to be very healthy and also has antibacterial properties.

Tis great for colds and sore throats too, I find. Also for heartburn.

I find the 'hold breath for 10 seconds then hyperventilate' thing works quite well.

I've tried that "trick" countless times. Never worked. Also, taking a spoonful of honey (if handy, of course) seems a lot easier to me.

Large glass of water, take 20 quick sips and then seven big gulps with no breaths in between. Works for me.:)

Cheers for making me nearly **** my pants at 2 in the morning. Also got cramp in my leg.

    Thank you good sir.

Drink water and gulp it at almost the exact same time when you hiccup. Repeat until it's gone. I don't have a scientific explanation for this but it works for me all the time.

I have a way that works every time, it is a little odd though.

Ok, what i do is take a mouthful of water and hold it im my mouth (i dont swallow :p). Then i turn upside down. I do this by putting my head on the sofa and swinging my legs up onto the headrest. Basically standing on my head.

Now this is important, only when i am upside down, i will swallow the water and then hold my breath for about 10 seconds.

I know it is a bit of a ceremony and looks rather silly, but it works, every time.
