Freedom and the Internet As We Know it - Gone?

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/international_strategy_for_cyberspace.pdf
"Certain hostile acts conducted through cyberspace could compel actions under the commitments we have with our military treaty partners,” says the document. “When warranted, the United States will respond to hostile acts in cyberspace as we would any other threat to our country.”

Needless to say, I'm skeptical of this at best. It's interesting to note that this comes shortly after a variety of countries used the internet as the catalyst for their liberation.

This is an International Strategy, by the way.

As long as governments agree with what it is you're doing, anyway.

This won't directly affect your average Joe (yet), you're right. But it's setting a precedent, and one I really, really don't like. The internet should be left alone.

The problem with the internet as with boards, is that much of it is privately owned and not subject to "free speech" as such.
If you want free speech on the net then legislation must allow for it so the server owners cannot be prosecuted.

Which is how it should be, imho. But this isn't about "free speech." This is about the internet becoming legitimately serious business, insofar as stuff that's done online can now result in real life warfare. Which is a scary idea.

I'd agree on the 'internet should be left alone' thing. If there's one thing I could place my hope in though, it's that the nerds will find a way around any measures the governments of the world could put in place. And I'm not using 'nerd' as a derogatory term.

the internet should be left alone entirely, no evidence or prosecution should ever be taken from it. its all just 1s and 0s stored on servers around the world, I should be allowed to say the most racist, hate mongering threatening things , share information on bomb making, DIY firearms or whatever else I want no matter how serious, sick or illegal in real life without fear of prosecution , now obviously im not saying that boards should allow all this, obviously each site is entitled to its own rules , but the likes of totse(defunkt) , 4chan, stormfront, nambla or whatever else should be allowed to continue and nobody face prosecution for any content posted, the internet is the last system of free speech left in the world and thats slowly being taken away , you may not agree with some things on the internet, but some people dont agree with what you put on the internet, it has to be an all or nothing system and nothing isnt an option

America "Land of the Free" is a joke phrase and one filled with hypocrisy - and they for the moment still have the hand over the on/off switch for the internet.

    For simple example:

Dropbox 'deceived' users over security: Files are open to government searches
    http://www.zdnet.com/blog/igeneration/dropbox-deceived-users-over-security-files-are-open-to-government-searches/9959

(I include the following just to show how more of Americans rights once again are being slowly stripped away)
Supreme Court OKs Warrantless House Search

Did anyone even read what I posted in the OP?

This isn't about net neutrality in terms of free speech. Baffled as to why the responses only concern it.

I hear what your saying. That America is willing to start a war on any country with its so called mates (not that its has many true ones these days) just because something that might happen over the internet.

I suspect this is a broadside warning to the Chinese and North Korean government what are lets be honest, doing their damnedest to crack American institutions, security services and business interests servers with their professional hackers daily.

There IS a cyber war going on - only no one has officially announced it in the public domain.
