Will the two cracks in the lower mirror be an NCT failure?

Its a van so I presume you mean DOE? They are not quite as strict as the NCT so I'd say it would be fine as the main mirror is not damaged.

If it's an estate or hatchback then it's required to have side mirrors, a saloon car is only required to have an internal mirror. The purpose of telling you this is that you cannot be failed based on the condition of mirrors that are not legally required so if your car is a saloon, it doesn't matter what state the external (side) mirrors are in.

If it's an estate or hatchback then read on.....

Below is an extract from the 'Rear View Mirrors' section of the NCT Manual.....

    Method of Testing

    1. Check the condition of mirrors fitted to the vehicle as standard equipment to see that the reflecting surface is not deteriorated or broken so as to impair the driver’s view.

    2. Examine the security and condition of each mirror mounting bracket.

    NOTES

1 Estate and hatchback cars are required to be fitted with an exterior rear view mirror on each side of the vehicle.

    2. All other vehicles should be fitted with an internal rear view mirror.

    3. Where a vehicle does not have two exterior mirrors, there must be clear evidence on the day that the vehicle was originally fitted with two exterior mirrors or it cannot be failed on this point. If there is any doubt, the benefit of the doubt must be given to the vehicle owner.

    4. A vehicle must not be failed on mirrors fitted in addition to the legally required mirrors.

My reading of the regulations is that if the break in your mirror 'does not impair the view of the driver' then you won't fail on this item.

im sorry but your wrong there, the way the nct look at it is, if its on the car it has to be in good working order, so if you dont NEED to have them, take them off, they cant fail whats not on the car. but if its on it has to be passable.

IMO it will fail in that condition, as it probably doesnt effect your everyday driving of the car/van, its still cracked and should be replaced.

Sorry but all of the text in italics in my previous post is straight from the current NCT manual. Just to save you scrolling back up, item 4 in the notes says as follows....

A vehicle must not be failed on mirrors fitted in addition to the legally required mirrors.

So if the OP's vehicle is a saloon car (unlikely based on the photo but that's not relevant to the issue you raise), he cannot be failed on the condition of the side mirrors because they are not legally required, a saloon car is only legally required to have an internal mirror.

Just buy the mirror glass and pop it in there, probably cost you €7-€10
