Is it possible to melt through say a cable tie with a laser?

is there anywhere I can buy a proper quality laser that can do this?

I think this green laser pointer http://www.freaklasers.com/100mW-green-laser-pointer-victoria.html is also suitable for you.

First be wary of green lasers. Most of them are Infra Red lasers with an inefficient crystal thingy that doubles up to visible light.

ie. if the infra red filters aren't top notch then there is a serious risk of eye damage.

also IIRC you can't cut through cable ties with lasers that would be legal here

While it is unclear of the leaglity of using lasers on airsoft devices discusssion of it is allowed here with the understanding that actually doing so may be illegal. Only lasers that meet the following criteria are legal in Ireland:

    - lasers of less than 5 milli Watts
    - in the light frequencies of 630 to 680nm

Which means that all Blue and Green lasers (which are out side of light frequencies of 630 to 680nm) are illeagle and should not be discussed here.
