WE ARE WELCOMING THE QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM AND NORTHERN IRELAND TO THESE SHORES. IT IS A GOOD MOMENT TO TAKE STOCK OF WHERE - AS A PEOPLE AND A NATION - WE CURRENTLY ARE........

Our eighty nine year old independence experiment from the United Kingdom has failed.

We could have used those years to build a true republic, based on the ideals and intent of the founding fathers.

Instead we, collectively, failed and created a bankrupt country, once dominated by a cruel and sadistic catholic church, now dominated by a talentless, self serving, corrupt establishment of gombeen politicians, unaccountable civil servants and self promoting hangers-on.

It's time to face reality. We belong as a vital, energetic part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It's time to come back home. It's time to Go Back to the Future....

Sign up to our newsletter today and find out how we at the Democratic Unionist Party of the Republic of Ireland intend to build a better future for the next generations of Irishmen and Irishwomen.

Instead, let's change our name to Aaaaarland so we'd be at the top of any list of country names. More people would notice us and tourism would boom.

"...especially as her money has been propping us up during the past 4 decades of massive EC grants / structural funds / subsidies / common agric. polies , our banks borrowing during the celtic tiger and our latest borrowing last Nov.

I'm pretty sure a similiar proposal was mistakenly taken up the BBC a while back and a spokesperson for the Queen said "The Queen can't be thinking about that"

She doesn't want us, can you blame her. I think that boat sailed long ago :pac:

Why do people keep saying 'I doubt they'd have us back' as though rejoining the UK is even in the realms of the most tiny, remote possibility? And even if it were why the hell would anybody want that? Ireland is going through a bad time but will get out of it - hopefully wiser for the experience. (Dangerous Man has lost his cynical hat somewhere in the house and can't find it for the moment.)

yeah cos the UK has never had any trouble. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cabinetpapers/themes/imf-crisis.htm

and if you hadn't noticed, the scots are about to get off that sinking ship.

Fact is that the majority of British people would be against reunification with Ireland. I find that fact delightful, personally.

because you wrote "Most people in Britain don't even want NI to be part of the Kingdom.. I doubt they'd want us either."

If we as a country pulled our socks up a bit maybe they would have us back. We are not all bad. At one point a third of its armed forces were Irish, and we won more victoria crosses per head than they did;)

A tenth of the population over there now is Irish or has Irish grandparents. There is a bit of warmth towards Ireland as most of us are a decent lot.

Theres no such thing as failure of independence the only way you fail at independence is return to british rule. Apart from that norn iron is the poorest part of the uk and scotland isnt doing to great either. We didnt exactly prosper under British rule either.

we were one of the richest parts of the world in the early 20 th century ...before stagnating wuntil the EEC money arrived. As the Italian academic said when visiting Ireland, anything good that was built here was done by the British.

Historically, England needed to keep Ireland occupied to prevent the possibility of the island being used as a base to invade britain. That is not really an issue now.

As others have said, taking on our massive debt would not be an attractive prospect.

The Chinese might like to have a base in Western Europe though. They could afford us too. Let's sell ourselves to China. Our sovereignty has already been compromised since the IMF came in, after all.
