When I was in town this evening the anti-war movement were having a little spectacle outside the GPO claiming "The Americans have landed in Shannon" (like we are being invaded) utter nonsense out of them anyway...

Wait until the Stars & Stripes are being flown all over the country, in stark contrast to the British Queens visit... I did not see one single Union Jack.

Anyway, enough of that, he's coming and this visit will be crucial for Ireland...

I for one welcome Barack Obama to Ireland! :D

From the thread title, it sounds like he's very excited about his visit.

Its only a Union Jack when flown from a boat.

I saw a couple of Union Flags however. Sadly both were being burnt.

I expect hoards of unemployed men from council estates to be out in force in their Chicago Bulls jerseys and hastily constructed placards.

Fire is a complicated things for a certain section of Irish society, obviously. The Obama visit wont come into the spotlight until the visit of Queen Elizabeth II ends. I would expect a strong anti-war protest out for that visit.

I live in a council estate and tbh most people round here work. In fact out of the 95 or so houses only 3-4 men don't work. Not bad imo considering the unemplyment rate is 15% on this island.

A pub in Waterford was flying the red, white and blue today. Sadly they did not have any Union flags and were flying the French flag instead.

    Welcome to AH.
As a fellow council estate scumbag, I'd just like to point out to you that we are the scum of the earth.
It's common knowledge that every single person living in a council estate is unemployed.
We're all products of single mothers and/or broken marraiges. Because we live in council houses, we are, by default, nothing but alcoholics who have 17 kids for 37 different mothers and just bum off the tax payers.

Everyone who has ever posted in AH pays about €1,000,000 in tax every year, so we have to bow down to them.

You have obviously never lived in a council estate.

I've lived in both a private estate and a council estate.
I'll take a council estate any day.

In a council estate your neighbours are the friendliest people on the planet.
In a private estate they are insular. They're actually afraid of each other.

By the way, people in council estates are only there because they cannot find work at a certain point in time. As soon as wok is available, they;ll jump at it. No matter what it is.
In a private estate the resident will never lower themself to manual labour.

I dont like Obama. He promised change, and we have seen none really, especially in foreign policy. Did he even get rid of Guantanamo bay in the end?

I'm not surprised, Michelle is hot enough for her age and after the anti-bush rally you'd want some pro-bush activity.

Responding to an (unfair) generalisation with another unfair generalisation is rubbish Terry.

Plenty of people living in private homes do manual work for a living. My 'auld lad' for example.

It is unfortunate but true that today's protests were manned by a certain section of society. That is, the "absolutely retarded with no sense of irony" subset. I'll say nothing more on this, tbh.

No I meant specifically how he knew the current employment status of 95 individual houses. That appears to go beyond they kind of info being friendly neighbours would elicit.

I'm assuming this is a wind-up. Otherwise its complete bollocks. I was reared in a Corporation House. Have lived in four "private" (that term always amuses me) estates. The worst type of cretin we encountered (ended up in court)? In the "private" estate.

FWIW I live in a "private" estate. I do manual work. Have done so for 35 years.

And why would they be looking for a wok.......................

Nothing about the hundreds of thousands of American lives given up down the years so that people like us could have the freedom to post on message boards like this - amongst many other things. As usual, very conveniently forgotten. Same ole story.

I grew up in a private estate, I bought a house in a council estate a few years ago. It was very nice.

I would still chose to live in a private estate.

It seems like you have a chip on your shoulder. It is unfounded and unfair to make generalisations either way. It's also unfortunate that you would react that way to being the subject of other people's lazy generalisations.

And according the Beeb, we're still part of Britian.

In their headlines, the presenter said that the President was beinging his trip with a visit to Britain, tomorrow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭gigino

The yanks probably think we are part of Britain. They put the infrastructure here / built everything of note, they protected us from Nazism and communism ( ww2 + the cold war ) etc, they gave our emigrants jobs, they funded us through 4 decades of EC / EEC handouts, they lent us money + they contributed to our bailout last Nov. I remember meeting a few Irish - Americans in the states and they had not a clew about Ireland. Some ordinary Americans could not even put Ireland on a map of the world.

The American president is just using us as a stopover on his longer, main visit to England anyway. A few irish-americans may be swayed in to supporting him if they think he comes from the auld sod. Talking about Obama, he bowed when he met the Queen last time. I wonder will he meet our president, and if he does would he bother bowing, or are we that important / unimportant ?
