Km V miles

Is it about time we all started speaking the same language and start moving towards kms. I still use miles myself but maybe it's time to make the change. I've only started thinking of it lately from reading peoples logs and they maybe doing intervals of 200s or 400s but instead of giving the splits they give the equated mile pace  maybe using kms would help bring back the splits as a track is more suited to using kms.

Or will it be miles forever and if kms finally did catch on would we lose the likes of the 5 miler and 10 miler in favour of 8k and 15k races.

I see the likes of Imra have been embracing kms for a while now aswell as the rest of europe bar the UK so why are we still using miles?

    ps
I'm aware of the irony having been responsible for the 1000 mile challenge :D

And on the day the Queen visited us - tut tut. What has europe ever done for us? eh. Those KM's will never catch on. As soon as we get back to the 440 yards, the mile, the 6 mile etc the better. I tells you so, in my day blab, blab, blab.

Actually, I tried the KM's for a while but I think I'm too old to change, hurt my brain trying to work out the maths. Maybe if I gave it a few months I'd get it.
Still miss the mile as a race - the perfect distance.

Ok, I'm in. Tried this before, and found it hard to do, but it's just a matter of getting used to.

Besides, I want to run a marathon in an hour (100 seconds x 100 minutes).

No. I don't like change.

Kms are for the bike, miles are for running. Fact. End of. :pac:

I haven't put my Garmin back into miles after Barcelona, but Garmin Connect is still old money. Great for forcing people who read my log to do some sums in their head :pac:

i tried it for a few weeks a couple of months back but i was still thinking in miles but the stats were in kms. Got confusing at times:D

I dont have a clue about mile pace so im all about the km's!! Its so much easier... 4mins per k = 40min 10k...simples

You can leave me out of it you modernists. I'm only just getting used to decimalisation

    6mins mls = 60min 10 mile
    8mins mls = 40min 5 mile.
    Simples:pac:

I'm in km at the moment
Easier to keep to my pace
Depends on the race you are running or training for I suppose

Miles. Go away with your silly foreign units.

I would think of altitude in metric, but any horizontal distance over a mile is..well measured in miles. Less than that though and I can only think in meters.

Kms for me. No major reason. Find it easier to keep pace as the kms tick by quicker.

Although kms for a marathon might be mentally tough

Barcelona was marked in kms, with markers every 5 miles too, and I thought that worked very well.

I have to pace a Half Marathon in KM's at the weekend  Anybody got any idea how the hell I'm gonna do that

Miles for me, don't like the clicks. :(

Oh Yeah and Woddle, since we are doing Mile Reps on Thursday are you going to be counting them as 1.61kms? :pac:

Same for me, everything I've done since I started running has been in km so that's the measure of pace I've a good picture of in my mind, when I hear mile pace mentioned it's a bit trickier to deal with.

Just pace it in miles and use the mile km markers as a rough guide to make sure you're on target. :pac:

I have only recently properly and fully switched from KM's to Miles ffs [did conn half tracking both, which was a good way to keep head busy!!)

I find it easier to run less of something i.e 6miles as opposed to 10 k, less counting too!

I worked in kms this morniing but still had the laps set to 1 mile.

Will always be miles for me, change is bad..... ;)
Will only switch to KM's if I have no option, so on the 25th Sept i'll workin 5k's :)

Very true. In a race do you really want ti be taking 21/42 Km splits along the way trying to figure out if you on pace?

Miles till i die. Besides how many people aim to run a 160 k week as a holy grail everyone refers to it as a 100mpw

    Hmmm 5 min/km x 21.1 = 1hr 45min 30 seconds = pacing fail. I'll have to keep you on target on sunday oisin.

I prefer to have my Garmin set to km as it makes me feel like I'm getting through the workout/distance faster. They rack up a lot quicker than miles do.

Big fan of the KM's myself - always more accurate for pacing as you'll be able to spot a variance quicker than with miles.

Having said that, I tend to spend a lot of time on a long run multiplying and dividing numbers by 8 and 5 for a bit of mental exercise :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,454 ✭✭✭hf4z6sqo7vjngi

KM's all the way for me although i think tri heads lean towards kms more than miles. It did take a while converting over!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,210 ✭✭✭kingQuez

When I was running I loved my miles... but it got confusing when I added swimming and cycling, so after resetting the garmin units one too many times I made the switch. Confusing as hell when you go back and do 1mile reps @ 10k pace :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭christeb

as long as DCM and glorious events like the Raheny 5 :D are measured in miles I don't think you'll have too many takers on here Wod.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭woody1

ballina half was marked in miles, my mind works in km, needless to say when i saw the 3 mile marker i nealry had a stroke ( i hadnt seen a marker before that ) for a second i thought i was running 8 min kms..instead of miles... im blaming that for my crappy time as well :-)

Took me a while to convert too but I swear I'm running faster as a result. We tend to gravitate towards round number (do we?) so lets say you run comfortably between 7-8 min miles with 7 being closer to temopio and 8 being easy. 7:30 pace might feel like a reasonable pace

By the same logic say you generally range between 4-5 min kms. You settle on 4:30 being the middle and thus a reasonably satisfying split to hold. Thing is though that 4:30/km is 7:15/mile!

When I used miles I used to think sub7 min miles was fast now its sub4min kms which is 6:25/mile..

Makes sense in my head anyway... :pac:

Saying that though I was having a good tempo run last night and was doing some crazy sums with kms splits as I came up to an old 5mile marker!

Very good. Its FYP and a compromise to the average 5ft10inch 12stone5lb boardsie :P

Seriously though, I told my Dad that I was doing an IM, he asked what that was. KMs was just not working so I had to round it off in his language, a 2 and a half mile swim, a 100 odd mile bike and then run a Marathon. Oh right, and whats that all together he asked? I didn't know, I had to google it in miles :)

Probably the best reason so far for making the change.

I prefer KMs as I can come home and say "I did 8 tonight" and it sounds a lot more impressive than the 5 I actually ran;)

Just use both to your advantage, when you reach halfway in the Marathon, you've completed 21 and only 13 to go ;)

I'm a km man btw - except tonight, bring on the Mile

This is actually the reason why I dont intend on using k average pace at the weekend for pacing duties (course is in kms). If the variance is too sensitive it can prevent getting into a steady pace but rather very start stopish kinda pace

cant get into that km thing at all. i got stopped for speeding acouple of weeks ago and the garda asked me what was the speed limit on this road i replied 'eh....30 miles an hour'
