Tyre Shredding

    Hey All,

Pretty new to the cycling game but have been cycling to work for over a year now.

My back tyre shredded today after a pretty long skid yesterday , after some tool pulled out in front of me (was traveling at a pretty good pace).

My bike is only about 6-8 months old so I was surprised that it went so easily. Is this the norm?

The tyres were Kenda Kriterium, I've replaced them Scwabb Marathon plus.

On a different note, 3 cheers to Delaney's bike shop. The first thing they said to me was if I didn't have any money on me, they'd take my phone number and I could pay them in the next few days. Top Class...

Depends on the road surface and the nature of the skid, but in general yes, road tyres have very little tolerance for skidding and will wear down insanely quickly if you do it.

Road surface can also be a factor. There are new cycle lanes up beside me which are nice smooth tarmac, but it's very obviously much rougher than your standard black tarmac (which also gets compacted by vehicles). This was confirmed when I hit the deck on it at a slow speed and the damage done to my bike was worse than any other fall on normal tarmac.

I imagine a 5m skid on that surface would be the end of my tyres.
