    Hi,

I have been claiming illness benefit for two years now but have been cut off because my "credits" have run out. Up until two years ago I was working since the age of 18 (Im 33 now). Im going out this week to actively look for work as I have two young children and a huge morgage with my husband. But Im wondering am I allowed to sign on the dole while Im looking for work? Or do I not have any credits left at all which is why I as cut off.
I dont understand any of this stuff, I feel very out of the loop!

    thanks!

I think you need to be means tested and at that point you will find out if you are entitled to claim anything... I think...

So you are fit to work ? Or are you only fit for work because your illness benefit was cut off ? Hmmmmmm.

Mods, perhaps it's wise to move this one to the state benefits forum so that this lady can get an answer to her question without editorials such as the one above ;)

Oh I don't know, I think a good economic debate could ensue ;)

To answer your question, I had a medical examination 2 months by the Social Welfare Medical Officer who recommended that I am not totally ready to be back at work yet without the necessary medical help that I need. Which I cannot afford!
But I now have no choice but to go out and work to keep my house over my head sick or not!

There are some free-loaders out there I grant you, but I aint one of them!

If you are not fit for work you could look at two other options - Invalidity Pension and Disability Allowance.
If you are fit for work, you would claim either Jobseeker's Benefit or Allowance, Benefit is based on your PRSI stamps - if you have been claiming Illness Benefit for 2 years, and working prior to that, you will probably qualify for Jobseeker's Benefit, but the rate will depend on your weekly earnings in 2009.
