How could you top up your motor tax online using a book of stamps?

Actually doesn't sound that crazy to me. They've been doing it for years with the TV licences where you fill a book with stamps, each with a value of €2.

Fill the book in the post office, then produce it at the tax office and renew.

Sounds vaguely plausible... but wouldn't that just be the same as 'saving'?

it is the same as saving but with the advantage that you can only cash it in for motor tax,

Pretty much. Though its a lot easier to pay €4/wk on stamps, than leave it till its due and have to try find a few hundred quid in a short period of time.

Hmmm false economy, as these same people who "save" €4 a week for the motor tax still seem to be able to stump up €50 a week for the fuel.

You're better off saving in the credit union and getting some interest.. plus you can't use motor tax stamps to repair broken a washing machine..etc.etc.

Basically you are lending the revenue commisioner your money which you will use to buy your motor tax a year later! (he gets the interest though).

so what,as long as your life is made easier just a bit..and to a lot of people payin weekly for stamps would be great,as you couldnt splash the cash you saved for your tax on a handbag or night out

Because of the admin charges I would say.

Also how much will this weekely trip to the post office cost you? More than the pro-rata motor tax probably!

how many people are out there trying to get jobs at the moment...some of the places they are applying for are far away from where they live and need a car to get to the interviews...this is perfect for them where they only need road tax ofr the day or week or whatever so they can get to the interview...i think its a brilliant idea and should be rolled out across the country...also this would be perfect for anyone that has a weekend toy sitting in the garage

You don't HAVE to tax it that way but its an option if you want it.

I think its a fantastic idea. I find it hard to save money for car tax. I usually end up spending it, so something like this would be a handy way of doing it. They've been doing it with TV licences for years.

Too much of a nightmare in changing / cancelling it if you change / sell your car.

Just put it on fuel! Simples.

also there would be no excuse for your tax being a month out so revenue should increase

as above ,easiest way would be to include it in fuel prices, tata way no car would ever be outa tax once driving on the road, and imported cars uncleared through vrt would also be paying it
