Heard it going overhead at approx 1200 but the low cloud meant I couldn't see it. Had the camera at the ready too.

Short video taken from under the approach. It broke off the approach on the first attempt, this is the second http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-QoDaSCXgM

Yes indeed, a BAE 146, G-RAJJ. It was a civilian flight, the plane had Cello Aviation titles in a very discreate grey just by the front exit.

That aircraft looked to be ' hired-in ' - why was she not on an aircraft of the Royal Flight ?

Pilot just said he needed 'a few more minutes'. Her majesty may have been on the throne...

For VIP flights there is usually a strict timing in terms of landing/taxi/doors open times, so it often happens that the aircraft has to lose some time so as not to arrive early.

My wife & I heard a plane coming in last night (3am ish) in Portmarnock, it didn't sound like a normal flight approach to Dublin Airport -well used to those obviously.

I'm wondering was it part of the advance party for her visit, anyone have any info on this?

I was surprised by this too.

I know the RAF have cut back on VIP travel but I didn't think this applied to the monarch when travelling for state occasions.

It will be interesting to see what David Cameron arrives on tomorrow.

According to Wiki, that most reliable of sources, aircraft of the Queen's Flight were absorbed into No.32 Squadron, and also lost their distinctive colour schemes in 2004

as has been mentioned the old Queens Flight has been absorbed into 32 Sqn, and the aircraft/sqn role were 'militarised' - they do high-threat VIP work, in-theatre communications flights and military/civil evacuations where civilian aircraft won't go.

I was watching from the closed road at Cork airport this afternoon - to see an amazing coincidence or an incredibly shrewd bit of scheduling from Aer Lingus - as QEII was walking up the steps in full view of the world what takes off in the background - it's only the baby of the fleet the spotless retrojet EI-DVM!

We all laughed when the royal 146 was held for a landing Ryanair!!

No doubt Ryanair will have a full-page advert on Monday saying something like - "Ryanair always land on time - even the Queen has to wait"

Could it be similar to the RAF tanker program?
The aircraft are leased by the RAF from a private company and flown by RAF crews. This arrangement reduces the capital outlay and costs so the govt can show a reduction in the Defense budget. (In the case of the tanker program the actual lease cost will be more than the cost of buying them outright)
