    With the season starting and with the Spiddal Tri on at the weekend and being a newbie to the sport just thought I would ask some more experienced athletes for their essential checklist.

    Checklist 1. What to bring to the race.

    Checklist 2. What to leave in transition.

    And on the Spiddal tri at the weekend and the weather being slightly less than balmy what are the recommendations for attire for the cycle and run.

    Others may disagree but I would recommend not letting the weather influence what you wear during a triathlon. You will be well warmed up by the bike/run and as soon as you hit the road you will curse yourself for wearing any additional layers.

    Less is more in terms of gear during a race. Dont bother with socks - you'll lose a couple of minutes drying and putting them on :)

    If everything is layed out surely it'd be 45seconds tops and thats if your hands are fumbling with the cold...

    I can’t remember which website I originally got this document from but it might be of help to some first timers. I put it on google docs for anyone who wants it.

    Some websites say to have a bucket/basin with water to wash feet, I have found that the amount of room available means there is no room so I would usually have 2 large 2lt bottles of water that can be used to wash feet.

    I would also have large bin liners in my race box, if raining they can be used to cover your stuff and keep it dryish and also dump your wet wetsuit and other gear into when leaving.

    Unless you have run without socks while training I would suggest wearing them. Any race longer then a sprint distance I would always take the time putting on socks, if you set them up right it doesn’t take long and your feet don’t have to be bone dry.

    the trick is to nearly have the socks insideout (except for the toe) then all you have to do instead of pushing a wet foot into a dry sock you only have to pull the sock over your foot. IMO much easier. here is a vid that might help explain.

    also bring spare goggles, nothing worse then the head band snapping when you put them on and frantically trying to tie knots in it to keep them on your head.
