OMFG... I had to stop listening, it was so upsetting. Pity they have no-one on the staff in RTE that Colm could ask.....

Yeah, I couldn't bring myself to replay it all. Really was expecting someone higher up in RTE to intervene with some proper information, but it didn't happen.

Also, you won't get from the podcast that the 2 callers were about an hour apart. Perhaps, they'll have someone intervene tomorrow, though I wont hold my breath:)

    Feck, that was desperate stuff...

Way to go RTÉ! This way, you'll get even more people on boards.ie looking on how to watch TV after next year and us amateurs will have to do your dirty work...

I have sent him an email:
    MR Hayes:

I am writing to you to spell out in no uncertain terms my absolute shock at the terrible lack of information on your show with regards to the digital switchover, free to air satellite, and saorview -

I am merely an enthusiast, but even with my limited knowledge, i found the information provided on your show to be utterly confusing and completely incorrect:

Firstly your callers indicated several times that Saorview requires your aerial to be changed - Let me make it clear that if you have an "analogue" aerial, no change is required what so ever. this is true for 90% of the island of ireland - Only in a very few countys are people using the old VHF aerials, and these are the ONLY people who need a new aerial -

Secondly your caller (who had a serious lack of knowledge btw) stated that Mpeg4 is currently the standard in Ireland - Although partially true this statement fails to point out obvious fact that only a HD MPEG4 box will be even partially compatable with the saorview service-

THIRD: A fully Free to Air satellite system, which is 100% LEGAL in ireland, and europe will provide the following channels entirely free of charge, and in perfect Digital:

    BBC1
    BBC2
    BBC3
    BBC4
    BBC1HD
    BBC-HD
    Channel4
    Channel4+1
    Channel4HD
    Five
    E4
    E4+1
    More4
    More4+1
    UTV
    UTV+1
    ITV1
    ITV1+1
    ITV2
    ITV2+1
    ITV3
    ITV3+1
    ITV4
    ITV4+1
    ITV1HD
    STV-HD
    CBS Drama
    CBS Reality
    CBS Reality+1
    CBS Action
    Horror Channel
    Horror Channel+1
    FILM4
    FILM4+1
    MEN&MOVIES
    MOVIES4MEN
    MOVIES4MEN+1
    MOVIES4MEN2
    MOVIES4MEN2+1
    TRUE MOVIES
    TRUE MOVIES2
    BBC NEWS
    CNBC
    AL JAZERRA
    CNN
    BLOOMBERG

And about 100 more less well known FREE TV STATIONS:

This type of setup is entirely legal and makes monetary sense in the current economic climate:

IN all honesty, i found it disgraceful that an RTE radio stations, and an RTE employee like yourself, would not bring on someone from RTENL or Saorview, and provide the proper information:

PLEASE CONSIDER, revisiting this subject ASAP, as you have quite literally provided the faulty/incorrect/incomplete information to your listeners, in a highly confusing way:

    Regards

    Liam

should have spoken to saorview first, In the same building, what a mess.

    regards,

I realize now that i could have included so much more in my email, sorry guys.
Once i had sent it, i had a stiff drink, and listened again -

    .....uh....

Once the pain had subsided, i realized i missed several other inaccuracies, about so called built in set top boxes, and "rabbits ears on the roof?!?!?!"

For what its worth here is Mr Haye's email for address for the show - maybe we can all add our two pence worth and send another email?

Is there no way to complain to RTÉ itself about the inaccurate content of one of its broadcasts?

The bit I managed to listen to was a disgrace!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

I wouldn't add too much to an email like that, I thought the existing email was perfect! For someone obviously not that bothered, too much info will simply make them forget the important bits or else simply not bother to read it. Concise points hit home the hardest.

The installer was clueless, suggest you listen to it again. Was his wife the first caller?

Didn't know his MP2 TVs from MPEG-2/4 TVs.

He agreed that if you have an MP2 TV with a Saorview box you'll get sound and no picture - dear god such tripe.

He appears to be an individual that knows a little about a lot, throwing in buzzwords like VHF, HD and "you know what I mean" when his little knowledge was exhausted. I hope the level of Saorview knowledge within the installation trade is better than that person.

I can understand why he was at home with the kids, his employer probably couldn't afford the PL insurance with him falling off the roof all the time.

Haven't heard a Saorview discussion this bad in quite a while, the week the Saorview promotion was launched Rory Coveney, Tina Leonard, Pat Kenny et al did a very good job explaining DTT but this has taken us back 12 months or more.

In fact I have not heard anything about Saorview since that launch from anyone in RTE. The only thing going on at the moment is that stupid meaningless ad with a cartoon cat and dog, telling us we will watch TV 'like we have never senn it before', whatever that means.

RTE could have woven discussion about DTT into all their programmes, mentioning it at least once a week in various ways - cost of aerials, ease of use of the epg, quality of the picture, how to get Freesat, etc.

Who is this Mary Curtis we hear so much about?

My guess is once the official launch takes place the promotion will be ramped up as we count down to ASO in 18 months time.

Irony. Mary Curtis is the person we should hear a lot more about since she is in charge of all this silence.

I emailed Saorview last night and apparently I was not the only one who pointed out the glaring misinformation promoted on the programme. They are shocked at the level of inaccuracy. Maybe they will have a word with Mr Hayes!

    Great stuff for a sitcom,

a clueless DJ who cant be arsed to research a topic about the company that employs him,

wife of a 'telecomms' guy that has to ask wether TV3 is available on 'saorview'

and an 'aerial engineer' that falls of roofs,

classic, or was it 'Naked Camera'

The Colm Hayes show on 2FM today had a segment on Saorview. I was kind of shocked that he obviously hadn't bothered to read up on the service at all, and just decided to wing it. Really poor form, a segment on RTE increasing the confusion

well its not his job to know about it either i would gather.
Thats down to RTE to publicize to the public what is going on and down to the manufacturers or retailers to let the customer know. Not colm hayes

Pity he didn't consult Saorview in the first place, rather than making stuff up. Mr Hayes has a pretty vivid imagination it seems - in today's broadcast he signs off this particular segment by suggesting that boardsies had issued "death threats" to him

Yes, why are people being so hysterical about a stupid radio program?

Since when did DJs know anything useful about anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,339 ✭✭✭liamtech

The whole thing could have been avoided, if they had gotten it right in the first place - HOWEVER.... In fairness they managed to correct the information for the most part... at least as far as i could see...

As for the "Death Threats to Colm Hayes.... LONG MAY THEY CONTINUE",

    MUAHAHAHAHAAA
(Grins malevolently while clutching Saorview compatible Crystal Ball connected to a .... VHF Aerial ... MUAHAHAHA!)

Eh? I would think that if a broadcaster wants to start a discussion on his show about any topic, he should at least do a bit of research first. That very much is his job, or do you think he only gets paid for the time his show is actually on air?

His show is an open show so anybody can call in about anything so whats he to do now if somebody calls him on a subject he is not aware off? Tell them to fcuk off on air.......

So he doesn't start any topics off, it is a complete free for all depending on who phones in at the time? And the concept of a laptop with an internet connection to check things on the fly is beyond him too?

Fair play to Mr Hayes for having someone on to clear things up imo. The chap from Saorview did a excellent job in explaining simply all that most people will need to know.
A little surprised by the 'death threats' comment, though I guess that's just the way he carries on.

Unless he presents from a particularly "special" studio, most in the radio centre have two PCs in front of the presenter with extremely high speed, not really restricted net access.

Chap was Rory Coveney, Simon Coveneys brother and current RTE DSO communications manager.

I'd be very surprised if it's random callers, straight through on to the air.

Doesn't most radio presenters have researchers why didn't he or she do more research into Saorview it would have saved him a lot of grief.

What radio show hosts need to know is,when they do a bad job like was initially done on this subject,it makes us question how accurate anything else they talk about on their show is and whether they were lazy in research there too.
Sloppyness like this completely devalues their reputation.

    Not good enough.
