can placing a certain object in the water prevent an attic tank from freezing up ie a ball? would putting salt in it work, also? thanks

Not ideal but I’ve seen a ballasted 3 ltr bottle floating in a water tank, it wouldn’t prevent freezing but would take up quite a bit of the frost expansion and its that that causes the problem.

    Why...Out of curiosity.

Lagging would serve better or an infrared light bulb

I don't like electrics (lights or heaters) unattended on a attic
I'm afraid of a fire breaking out when they fail or falling down
We removed insulation between the sealing joists under the water tanks
    They didn't freeze last winter
