Question for those with the knowledge - Is the Hare a protected species in ROI? Can you hunt with rifle and or lamp. Is there a season and if so what is it.

    Cheers.

From what I know you are allowed to shoot them legally but very few people do especially in areas where coursing is big!

They are protected and they have a season. Debate is ongoing on the legality of shooting them with a rifle and I've no intention of restarting it here.

    List of game and seasons.

They cannot be shot under a lamp. As IWM said there is an ongoing and very, very long debate of shooting with a rifle. My personal position on the matter is, whether legal or not, its unsporting to shoot them with a rifle, and i very rarely if ever shoot them with the shotgun.

I am in no way opposed to shooting them however they are not abundant in my area so when i see them i leave them be.

    Hares, Can be shot.
    Most Hunters don't though.

My understanding of the law, having had a licence that clearly stated I had an Unlimited shotgun licence that could shoot game birds and Hare in season.

I believe the only way to shoot hare is with a shotgun.
I have a few hares near me, but I leave them alone.
The get enough hassle from Foxes and Cars and do not breed like Rabbits so Farmers don't mind them (unless in Greenbelt areas ;) They love Sapling Tree bark)

The Taste similar to a rabbit, but are stronger taste as they generally live on Marsh grass as opposed to lush green grass.

I've only ever eaten one and that was years ago.

There are loads of them down my way. Was out today on a cattle farmers permission cos he wanted some rabbit cleared. Only saw two rabbit but saw loads of red hare.

Not stirring but just interested in yer opinion on the Hare. Would you see it as different as shooting rabbit? Why would shooting them under lamp be different to during the day?

I'd say they're a hard shoot because they run like Hussein Bolt!!!

It's not legal to lamp them in any case. I have places around me crawling with them, so wouldn't be averse to shooting one for the pot to try it, but if it never happens, so be it. Personally, I think it's a shotgun only job, but really not getting into the debate again. They're a big animal, so it's a heavy shot job. Would imagine 4s and 5s, like duck in high winds.

0's are quite good or BB.
A Hare is as heavy as a small dog "dead weight"

Land drainage kills more hares than any form IMHO

Habitat loss is their biggest problem.
I took a few pics of hares last Feb through the scope of a rifle Via Mobile phone. There was 7 in that field, but that is the high side of a marsh.

Personally I leave them be, Now If I lived in Wickla, Munty would be on My menu Big time ;)

And very tasty they are too - nice dark meat with great flavour as part of a top class hunters grill.:D

Yeah, I've seen a few I thought were small sika calves at first glance when they moved.

I've heard of muntjac not a million miles from me, but, well, I'll believe it when I see it.

I've heard a variety of things about proper preparation. Everyone seems to recommend something different. What's your own take on it?

We must team up over the Summer to get some Munty.

The great thing about a 365 Season.

I'd fit a whole Munty on a barbecue I reckon.

It would be nice to have not a heavy drag.
We could quarter them on the spot and a rucksack or two would carry them, lined with a good bin liner to stop blood of course.

Supposed to taste quite like Hare

Had a look through old posts in relation to shooting with rifle or shotgun. Loads of speculation but couldn't see any links to legislation. So is it that the animal is respected too much to shoot with a rifle, that its believed a rifle wouldn't drop one cleanly and quickly, a fear that people might shoot the hare when its on the move or that its not seen as giving the hare a sporting chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

If you can find them, I'll have a go. Will keep an ear open here, but there's a lot of noise for no signal methinks.

Twas a while back but I remember herself using 2 saddles of Hare cooked in sea salt, black pepper, table spoon of butter and vegetable oil. Served with mushrooms and somekind of redwine sauce(I'm not sure about the last bit) - Christ!!, I'm dribbling now just thinking about it:pac:;)

It can be roasted, if left to hand for 2-3 days in a fridge.

My Gran used to be a great Game cook.
She learned from her Gran who lived through the Famine on all Irish game.

There is a nice amount of meat on a hare.
Darina Allen has a recipe for it in her book Simply Delicious

Sounds good - She was probably familiar with "Jugged" Hare too:)

PS: The spread of the non-native Brown Hare in NI is said to be a threat to our Native Irish Hare in the same way that Grey's are threatening Red Squirrels. I assume when they reach the Republic(which looks likely:() they will treated the same as Muntjac!!

Cheers. There are a lot in a few places I shoot. Would be nice to try one once the season opens. At least a week of hanging eh? Should be plenty tender after that.

I have shot and eaten animals the same day, but to be truly nice leave hanging at least 2 days for all game.

I cooked 45 Sirloins today that were left hanging in the butchers 21 days on the hook (he kills his own)

Extra virgin Olive Oil and some herbs always marinade well too on game

Cab Sav makes a nice marinade wine

I have a nice few hares around me and when the season opens I will have to take control of them ;)

Is this an open invitation to the mountains?

Would love to see a muntjac

You and me both, hanging skinned in my chiller. However, until I'm shooting them, I'll remain skeptical.

I would be happy with a picture which was proved to be in Ireland like what was said in a previous thread with a newspaper or something

I've a half decent camera and we can buy a news paper

They've been confirmed. John Griffin witnessed the body of one shot down by Avoca a couple of years ago. What I'm skeptical about is the idea that there's a plague of them. Personally I'd suspect tiny numbers concentrated in small areas. If I'm proven wrong and see one while out, it's going in the bag though.

Make sure to take pics before the shot and after. I say it would just be a small number in a small area otherwise there would have been more sights but you couldn't say that for sure because they are so small and people might never see them. There is deer in a forest near me but very few know about them.

We'll get a few in Sept.

I'd prefer 5to be known as the man got rid of Munties though
Like Noel Browne and TB :)

Set up a camera on a scope with an accelerometer and we'd get an image of the actual kill

I'd skin on Video for Bernie Wrong and Co. ;)
