Would anybody know if there is a online map of this route so I can check out the route in more detail and the profile. Also it looks a bit odd as there are apparently 2x100km routes - a Sportif and Tour. What's the difference between them or is that just as mistake?

    Thanks

Haven't got a route map sorry but if you look at this area on a map it might help give you a rough idea of the route....

Last year it started in Dundalk, out towards Castlebellingham, through Ardee, back to Dundalk, over Jenkinstown "hill" (Cooley Mountains), through Carlingford and back to Dundalk.

Thanks furiousfox I'll take a look at that rough route. It'll at least give me an idea of things.

Felt like hell last year when I did it but my climbing skills were pretty non-existent then. I plan to cope better this year what with my boards jersey to boost my hillz skillz...

I am from Cuchulainn Cycling CLub. Route is 100km & IIRC it heads out towards Dunleer, across to Ardee back into "Da Town" & then out up Jenkinstown, across the Long Woman's Grave, Carlingford & home. The main climb Jenkinstown starts off steep but very steady for about 800-1,000m. Then is a 50m flat strecth & gets really steep for another 100ms, levels off again then kicks up. Club record for the TT is about 5-6mins on it. Second half is definitely tougher.
Club is trying to promote a big cycling day with a family 10km cycle, a 50km cycle and 2 100km events (one for those who just want to get around & a faster one). So bring your other half & kids along while you do the 100km, let them do the 10km.

thinking of signing up to this as my first event.

not too concerned about distance, just the climb!

not sure whether to sign up for the "tour" or sportif. at the minute can average around 28-29kph over 80km.

    any advice?

It passes over the magic hill, which is a short section that looks like a downhill but is actually an uphill (mysterious!). It's due to an illusion caused by the horizon being obscured by trees, or something. People sometimes put their car into neutral and marvel at how it rolls 'uphill'

And the climb at Jenkinstown is hell, but the descent into Omeath is good and very scenic if it's a nice day! :)

Found the hill a killer last year.

Also the wind was very strong around Omeath so descent wasn't that fast.

climbs are only hard if you go up them fast. The climb is not too bad if you ride steady with a group at ypur level.

this'll be my first time cycling in a group (as long as there's one i can keep up with!)

thinking of just signing up for the supposedly faster sportif and pushing myself a bit to keep up rather than just get around.

i'm sure there'll be a variation in pace and won't be left (too) far behind

Just realised this is the same day as Dublin and Louth are playing in the Leinster championship in Croke Park - wonder will it have a big impact on numbers.

The start of it last year was tougher than the couple of races I have done since. But you can always drop back if its too fast. Just wheelsuck as much as you can. I got dropped long before the climb but caught a few on it and we got round for a gold. There was no food stop last year so bring plenty of fuel.

Strictly speaking, there is a food stop available but you won't have time if you want to get around in the 3h20 'gold' time...

The 100km goes off at 10am? What about the 50km? Same time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,123 ✭✭✭LCD

All routes will be starting promptly at 10am. Instructions will be given as to where the 50km route diverges.

Did the Tour of Louth today. Really enjoyed the spin.Congratulations to Cuchulainn CC for running a super event.
I had been wavering between the silver4hr group and the gold 3hr 20min group, but in the end I decided to jump into the gold group just before the start. The plan was to try and hang in there as long as possible and hope for the best. Things went better than expected and I got round in 3hr 12min. Would have been nice if we could have got some of yesterday's weather but it never got too rainy apart from a bit at the end. I even spotted a few boards.ie jersey gentlemen!

great spin yesterday, despite the weather-didn't feel like june at all!

didn't know what to expect, so decided to go off in the silver group and try to stick in with it.

got in with a group of about 20-25 or so for the first loop, speed was up around the 30kph mark all the way.

group got a bit stretched out over jenkinstown hill (which i didn't find too bad, happily enough), and over the home stretch in the speed picked up considerably (at one point over 40kph). managed to stick onto the back of a final group of 10-15 and got in over the line in the "gold" time of 3h 17min. (although my computer only had 3h 10min on it-anyone else find this?)

my fastest day on bike so far, really enjoyed it

The Finish Timer was based on the Platinum start, the Platinum went off 3 mins before the gold and the gold 3 mins before the silver. That would put your adjusted time at 3h 11mins. Congrats!
