I just have normal platform pedals on my bike as basically couldnt afford spending more money at the time. But now im looking to get a pair of proper pedals and shoes.

What type of pedal system and shoe are the best in terms of comfort?

I use SPD pedals which have recessed cleats so the shoes can be walked in. Very handy for commuting, long spins, nipping into the shops.

If you're going to be racing, apparently the SPD-SL pedals give you better stability at the expense of the shoes being impossible to walk in...

Thanks very much for the reply.

Ill be doing commuting, leisure spins short and long and nipping into shops etc so I'll go with what you have the spd's with the recessed cleats.

I have and like Look Keo pedals. The cleats make walking pretty crappy but I find them nice when I'm in the saddle which is probably the most important thing.

Same here, the cleats with the rubber bits make walking easier if you don't have them.
