Well its not my idea but if anyone is interested just pm me and ill see what I can work out,im sure theres lots of people and shops that have old bits they want to shift,i just want to bring them together,i think its much nicer to buy something in person than from a pic on the interweb!

Sounds like a scene from the movie Bicycle Thieves, if anyone's seen that. Big open-air market with stalls of bike parts. I think the boy and his father go there looking for the father's stolen bike. Or else for spare parts to fix it up before it's stolen. I forget which.

We've had a few threads talking about having a car-boot sale, but no-one ever got round to organising one (although there was one evening last summer that Ryan Sherlock posted about)

sounds like a great idea,it would mean i could clear the mountain of parts taking refuge in my van

Definitely interested too. I'd head along.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Crow92

Definitely do this, it's a great idea that could draw in a fair bit of people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭Holyboy

Thanks for the above support and keep it coming, the more the merrier, I haven't thought about where and when yet just wanted to see if there was any interest in the idea but presumed there would be, any sellers of any bike related things would be welcome not just vintage, new, old, odd, funny, anything will go as long as it's safe(I'm sure regular boardies know how I feel about safety!) still no PMs, but I'll contact some shops and the likes soon and see what happens.
This is only one of my many bicycle related plans for Ireland, I hope my others will get the same support:p

With regards to a venue, would you be looking for like an indoor market area?

Would it possible to use a public area for such an event?
I have it in my mind Dartmouth square could be a good spot? Nice quiet enough park beside the canal, easy enough to get to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,525 ✭✭✭kona

A Dart station Car park would be ideal. makes it easily accessible for everybody from howth to greystones and anybody who wants to drive from elsewhere coul find it handier than some random road in the city. A bank holiday would be the best day too as everybody(well most) will be freeish. Have it in the morning and finish by Lunch so we can get other stuff done :) Ive heaps of random bits i want to get shut of.

Sounds deadly, location would be need a little thought ,and maybe the option of swaping stuff ,times are hard, also clothes, books, old vids the amount of cycling stuff from A-Z is vast the more you think about it.

Not a bad idea, my good lady informs me you hipsters hang out there too, fixed gear riders and the likes;)
I'll check it out, doesn't really matter where it is though, just that it happens.

    Definite yes

    Great initiative.
Meeting place to sell/swap stuff/exchange info. Think one of the car boot places is a good spot if they allow to share their spot.

Maybe a Sunday in June? I still got a lot of stuff to get rid of, trying to only buy stuff now that I can use right away rather than 'collect'!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

Yeah, it's a great idea alright. This is the third thread in a couple of months suggesting it. Never gotten past the wishful thinking stage but hopefully this time we can get a bit of momentum going. Bernard Shaw has been suggested in the past and I still think it's a good idea, however bear in mind it's entirely outdoors and all our efforts could go to waste if it lashes rain that day, but perhaps that's a risk worth taking for a well known, easily accessible, city center location. I think with the massive growth in cycling in the past couple of years there's definitely room for an annual bike swap/jumble/flea market type thing. So if Holyboy is willing to take up the mantle on actually doing this, I'll certainly be willing to give a dig out with the organising! As well as all the stuff we've got ourselves, there's various other places that'd probably like to get involved.

I threw the last one in for you Holyboy, so you don't get reprimanded for shameless self promotion! :)

As soon as possible, and anyone can come and swap, sell, trade anything bike related, maybe the people with a lot of stuff could rent stalls, never organised anything like this before but it is needed and some one needs to do it,why not me!

    ---

The Co-op in Newmarket Square, D8, hosts a range of Sunday events, such as the Dublin Flea (last Sunday of every month) and The Brocante Market (third Sunday of every month). It might be possible to piggyback on the Flea with a sub-event, or for a few people to just take stalls near each other in the general Flea. I'm not sure how heavily subscribed it is, but it'd be worth giving the organisers a shout. (I don't think the Brocante would be suitable [unless you're just selling vintage Peugeot parts!].)

Sorry the entire world can't all be done in stark Eurotrash Swiss type. Sorry some people like to have fun. Sorry I'm standing in the way of your minimalist Bauhaus-esque fascist snoozefest. Maybe sometime you should take off your black turtleneck, stop compulsively adjusting your Tumblr theme, and lighten the f___ up for once.
People love me. Why? Because I'm fun. I'm the life of the party. I bring levity to any situation. Need to soften the blow of a harsh message about restroom etiquette? SLAM. There I am. Need to spice up the directions to your graduation party? WHAM. There again. Need to convey your fun-loving, approachable nature on your business' website? SMACK. Like daffodils in motherf___ing spring.

The Co-op is a great venue, it's also very big! Which could be a good and bad thing (good if there's a very big turn out). The existing events are pretty heavily subscribed (my sister has a stall at the flea market and apparently it's quite hard to get into) There's events on there most Sunday's, including a steam-punk event on the second Sunday of the month :D, not sure about Saturdays though.

Another possibility. The Complex on Smithfield square. A large(ish) open plan ground floor space that opens out onto the square. Size wise i'd say it's mid way between Bernard Shaw car park and Newmarket co-op (edging closer to Co-op i'd guess) I was there for Vantastival launch party and it was very nice.

It was designed for micro-soft as a friendly and easy-going alternative to times new-roman, helvetica, century gothic and the like which is a bad start (cos micro-soft is evil) and subsequently it's become a tad over-used and is generally regarded as a hall-mark of un-hip design.
It's not the sort of thing that really matters on a bike-shop website cos you're just trying to convey basic factual information but my girlfriend is studying graphic design and visual communication so I'm contractually obliged to care about font choices.

Sorry for dragging things a tad off topic and good luck with the bike jumble, would be cool if it became a regular thing.

Holyboy senior is a graphic designer, allbeit an old school one he used to use letraset and scalpels and the likes,he likes it,but maybe I'll change it don't want to seem "uncool"

If this goes ahead, you need to spread the message - I would suggest informing local clubs, as not every cyclist is a boardsie;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭Joeyde

Ah was away for the weekend, delighted to see this gaining momentum again, its such a great idea. Is holyboy going to decide the venue then?

Id be happy to help circulate notices to some clubs or put up posters on the northside of dublin around bike shops etc. Perhaps one of the comic sans haters could design a poster when a date is decided?

Im not too familiar with the race calender, could some experienced racers suggest dates perhaps?

I'm sure most boardsies would oblige in printing off a communal flyer or 5 and putting them up in their lbs or community notice boards, maybe a facebook event to spread it to friends and the like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭Holyboy

Well there does seem to be plenty of interest on here anyway,i was thinking about a small kind of thing but maybe should be thinking a bit bigger,a boardsie dropped by yesterday and suggested having it during bike week,i was on a stall at pedal in the park last year and that was great,i was the one cycling round topless on a girls 18" bike if anyone was there:)!i dont have proper internet at work so only have a few hours in the evenings and Sunday to get online and contact people but ill see what I can do and keep all suggestions coming, Thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭studiorat

Just to play devils acrobat for a second.

Question: Should everyone wishing to sell or trade stuff have a stall? What if it's only a few bits and pieces? How would that work out?
