    Absolutely.
It's well documented. We always try and calve heifers earlier than the cows to allow them some latitude. There will always be exceptions though.

Thought so one of my first calfers last year took about three and a half months to start cycling again, this year she was bulling within a month

Are we talking sucklers here? If so then allow about 6 weeks for first time calvers to slip back. So you'd need to be calving them 6 wks earlier than the main herd.
    Don't know for dairying.

break cow/calf bond by only allowing suck twice a day from 4weeks of age is a very reliable way of getting them cycling.
could get vet to inject with estrumate 6wks after calving... talk with vet about it.
also a rising plane of nuitrion. start feeding 2kgs/day of a dairy type meal.

but def try and calf them down several weeks ahead of the main herd as a certain amount of slippage should be expected

would it be better to let them let them cycle once and bull them in 3 weeks time ?

I would bull them as I find them even though the submission rate might not be as high as during a regular cycle.

If she repeats, get her in 3 weeks but it's surely worth the punt!
