No - you don't need to waste your money on that nonsense. Have a decent breakfast (porridge/fruit/water) and then dilute some orange juice with your water and pack an extra couple of bananas. Bring a fiver to grab a mars or water if you run out of supplies. When You get home try to eat a meal within the first hour and something sugary in the first 5 minutes.

Granola type bars are good too. Don't melt in pocket. Natures harvest have some good ones. For a drink mix a small bit of salt with twice as much glucose in water and add ribena to taste. Agood brekkie is best though!

Dont just mix table salt! It has to be proper electrolyte salts.

Why not regular table salt? I thought that it would do the job, but where would you get electrolyte salts?

    Definitely avoid salty water.

A solution of sodium chloride in dihydrogen monoxide is the the way forward.

Referring back to previous thread - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056241617&page=2

@Blorg - ''Common table salt is indeed what you need. If you are dehydrated, you will always be given salt water; if severely dehydrated to the point that oral rehydration is too late you'll be given an IV saline solution; this is simply sterile water and sodium chloride (table salt.) 0.9% salt makes it isotonic.''

    Now I'm confused

Blorg is correct, table salt is fine "electrolyte salts" are just expensive supplements.

If your not keen on putting together your own energy drinks to begin with maybe go for a supplement thats been designed for endurance use. It might be more expensive to start with but in time you can figure out what really suits you and go for cheaper alternatives.

I use the 4:1 Carb/Protein Energy Source from High-5. They also contain electrolytes though I also use High-5 Zero tablets for extra salt intake on longer journeys. You can purchase them online. I've had no bother on spins lasting several hours and north of 150kms.

As yer voiceover man on Blind Date used to say,'Of course the decision is yours'.

I go on 120km spins, and I eat absolutely nothing during the trip.
I just take 2 litres of water, and before I leave, I eat porridge and a couple of bananas, and force feed myself with 1 litre of water..

Then when I get home, I eat like a horse.

Its maybe not the right way to do it, but it gets me back home.

As regards how often to drink, I just drink when Im thirsty, not sure if thats good advice though, I read somewhere that you should drink before you are thirsty to keep yourself properly hydrated.

Table salt only provides you with sodium (one electrolyte) where as proper electrolyte salts provide you with sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Secondly electrolytes are extremely cheap when purchased from the right source

    http://www.myprotein.com/ie/products/electrolyte-powder

A tenner might seem like alot but when a serving is less than a gram each it really is extremely cheap for proper electrolyte salt.

Fact is table salt will not do the job and is a poor alternative for what is a very cheap solution!

table salt is just a convenience in cases of severe hydration. In regards to optimum performance blorg is completely incorrect and cyclists should be looking for a much more complete salt than just sodium(table salt)

At 800 miligrams a serving it works out at like 3 cent a serving or something ridiculous

You don't need to replace potassium, calcium or magnesium. Your body has more than enough stores. Just a another myth put out by vested interests. Replace the water if you're thirsty, the sugar/food if you're hungry and a bit of sodium (probably more than enough in the food already) and you're fine. No need for any supplements, cheap or otherwise.

Wash out your mouth (salty water optional)!!!!! blorg is next to infallible*
