First time changing my hair colour

Ok Im completely and utterly new to dying my hair, I've never done it before and have no idea how to go about choosing which brand to use, etc.

I have medium brown wavy medium/long length hair, pale skin and brown eyes and I would really like a change, nothing hugely drastic like platinum blonde or anything but does anyone have any suggestions as to what colours would suit me and which brands to use?

Cause I'd like to do it at home and not spend a load of money in the hairdressers. Sorry if its a stupid question/thread btw! :o

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Thanks :)

why dont you go and find a salon with student days or looking for models that way you can get it professionally done and cheaper,id advise asking for a semi permanent colour as they fade out unlike permanent that leave you with a defined regrowth. hope that's of some help.

    thanks sunshiner :)

but do you know any good brands I could use at home that are semi permanent?

Semi permanent colours would be a great way to go as they will wash out in 6-8 washes, so you can play around with colours to see which suits you best.

just wanted to let you know that if you're using semi-permanent colours then any of the lighter colours wont change your hair at all because theres no bleach in them. brown hair will need bleach for the lighter shades to work. so unless you want a sheen of red/purple or something like that or else a deeper brown then you wont get a drastic change from semi-permanent. but like you said, you dont want a drastic change. i use the casting creme gloss.

if you are going dark and are unsure which shade to choose id advise you to pick the lighter of the two. if you're pale then id stay away from anything too dark/black because you might look a bit washed out. maybe go kind of maroon/brown, like scarlett johansson. best of luck either way! its nice to change your hair colour every now and again! im addicted! :D you'll feel all brand new shampoo!

Please make sure that you do a patch test at least 48 hours before you dye your hair. A friend of mine didn't and got a serious reaction to the colour.

Just tab a tiny bit behind your ear a couple of days before you colour (a ear-bud is ideal).

Thanks everyone and thanks Miaireland I'll make sure to do that!

And @CK2010 - if I want to go just a little bit lighter, not blonde but more of a light brown will it still not do anything?

in order to go lighter you need to remove pigment from your hair which is done with peroxide. the semi permanent colours only add colourants and dont use peroxide.
going for a kind of reddy colour might make it look warmer and more sunkissed but it wont go a lighter colour.
