You marry someone who has a child and that's it Stepfather is not a legal status AFAIK.

If your mother marries a guy he has to formally adopt you to be your stepfather. until then he's technically just your mothers husband.

Stepfather is just a term, do you mean adopt the child? is so then you and your partner have to both adopt the child. Theres alot of info on the citizens advice website

It means you marry a woman who has a kid.

In one case you have no legal or financial obligation to the child what so ever and no legal relationship under law despite being now legally the spouse of the mother and next of kin. You are also not the legal guardian of the kid so if there is a Father on the scene and your mrs up and dies, no matter how many years the kid has been living with you as a family he get to take the kid.

In the other you also apply to adopt the kid and make it legally your own, so you have legal rights and responsibility under law.

Thats not entirely true, unless the mother was either married to the father of the child when it was born or they (natural parents) both signed the statutory declaration after the child was born if unmarried.

If you adopt the kids then you are then the kids father, no step involved at all.

If your merely married to the mother then you are the step-father.
