From the IAA website-FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS - Shannon FIR and Control Area, Dublin Control Area and Control Zone and the Cork Control Zone from the 17th to the 20th May 2011 inclusive.

Due to the planned visit to Ireland by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Department for Justice and Equality for reasons related to security has requested the Minister for Transport to establish areas of temporary restricted airspace (TRAs) within which flight restrictions shall apply.

The controlling authority for all TRAs is the Controlling Officer of the Department of Justice and Equality.

A TRA will be in place 30 nm radius of Baldonnel Co. Dublin from the 17th of May continuously until the 20th of May.

A TRA will be in place 30 nm radius of the Curragh area Co. Kildare on the 19th of May only.

A TRA will be in place 30 nm radius of the Cashel area on the 20th of May only.

A TRA will be in place 30 nm radius of the Cork area on the 20th of May only.

ONE Low level Air Corridor TRA will be in place between the Cashel Area and the Cork area on the 20th of May only.

All scheduled commercial air transport aircraft, including charter and cargo operations in receipt of an Air Traffic Service which are departing and arriving at licensed aerodromes within the areas or transiting the TRAs under the control of an ATS Unit are not affected.

They've been practising longer than that. The PC9s will have radar guidance and will be directed by the radar operator onto the target, so anyone wandering where they shouldn't, will be intercepted.

You use the word "intercepted", meaning to stop or interrupt, are these planes armed?

Machine guns and rockets. In fairness there isnt much of an aerial threat, if a highjacked airliner or something was detected by the time it got here it would be too late. I guess they have to be seen to be doing something to protect against "someone" that might attack. Who that someone is I don't know. A foreign airforce would be intercepted by the RAF but again who could that threat airforce possibly be? I would imagine a ground based terroist threat to be much more of a reality.

They carry .5 machine guns. However it's unlikely that anyone will be shot down unless they completely ignore any instruction to follow the intercepting aircraft.

The most likely scenario is an off course private pilot or a helicopter popping up off a private site. In one scenario, an Air Corps helicopter was designated as a 'Sky News' helicopter. Presumably to be the target. That's a bit unlikely though. Far more likely to be a TV3 chopper;)
