Hi all, I'm going to Slane in a couple of weeks, its the first time I've been to something like this, just wondering what I should wear? I'm quite a girly girl so I still want to look nice but not too overdressed. I know the weather will also have to come into consideration.

Well assuming it's an open air concert (AFAIK they do weddings and everything, so I'm just guessing it's outdoors):
DO NOT wear heels. Even little ones. I know you might think it's ridiculous I even feel the need to say it, but you'd be surprised how many people wear inappropriate footwear to outdoor events. It's crazy. The only thing worse than when someone wears heels to an outdoor event and gets sunk into the ground, is when it's dry enough that they think it's ok, and don't realise how inconsiderate it is to the people around them in the crowd. Toes inevitably get stepped on.

Anyway, the main thing is to make sure you've got a raincoat in your bag. Umbrellas do not work in a crowd situation, so a good, fold-up-able raincoat is the way to go. Don't be afraid to throw on a pair of wellies if it's been raining close to the event.

As for your actual clothes, it depends on the event. I think I heard something about a Kings of Leon concert soon so I'm going to keep going on an outdoor concert basis. I'd go with a nice little pair of shorts with a longish flowy top.

Wellies with shorts and a long top, im going and that is along the lines of what I will be wearing.
Coz by the end of the day the ground is in a mess and so are the toilets so at least in wellies you can walk around and not care if they get destroyed..

Thanks for the advice, if its a really a warm day do you think I could just wear sandals? and is that bare legs with shorts or shorts with tights?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭whatsyourquota

Wellies if its wet sandals if its not!
Bring lots of tights with you as if it is raining they will get muddy fast and its nice to have something clean to put on. I prefer dresses myself but thats just personal opinion

It'd have to be dry for at least two-three days beforehand, but yeah that's fine. If you plan on getting near the front in sandals be wary of getting stepped on though.

Bare or tights is fine, though if you think you'll be warmer with tights, go for it. Way I see it, if you wear tights you can always take them off, but if you go bare you don't have the option of changing. Shouldn't be a huge difference though.

Yep,very true......never ceases to amaze me how stupidly people dress for gigs sometimes, the wellies are a great idea,id definitely recommend them too,the main thing for Slane would be to put comfort ahead of fashion(yes, yes i know!)you can still look good but just go for a casual look, the raincoat is a great idea too, sandals are a big no no imo,you will have people stepping on your toes at this......just stick to light clothes and you should be fine

    DO NOT WEAR SANDALS!!!!

    DO NOT WEAR SANDALS!!!!

+10000000! Even if it's scorching, wear something a little bit more substantial, like those plimsolls you can get in Penneys. There will be beer spilling, guys (and girls possibly) peeing everywhere, and just general disgustingness that will get all over your feet, not to mention the trampling issue that others raised in previous posts. Can you imagine trying to negotiate a trip to the Portaloo in sandals? YOCK  (If you think you'll be able to last the entire day without having to use them, you're kidding yourself)

If it is rainy and you go with the shorts 'n' wellies combo, I'd recommend you pop tights or leggings on under your shorts as wellies can sometimes chafe your calves/shins. Not cool.

I'd also advise you to think of layers, as it could be scorching when you set out early in the day but turn at any time, and when the sun goes down it'll get quite chilly.

Another wee tip of mine for festivals/gigs is a non-fashion one but you might find it useful: I always bring one fairly tough, (clean!) bin-liner bag with me so that if I'm whacked out tired during the day I can throw it down on the ground to sit on, thus avoiding wet and grubby bum!

I'm still undecided about what to wear to Slane! I don't have wellies but if they are recommened then i'll have to go buy a pair-is it worth it??
Also I have a parka with no hood on it-anybody have any idea where I might buy a rain hat?
I just saw one on asos that's nice but I won't have it delivered by Friday!
This is the one I saw

    Thanks in advance!!

+1 on the wellies. Even if its not wet the ground will be a mess from thousands of people trampling on it. If its raining believe me you will need them.

I was at Slane a few years ago for the Rolling stones and the whole place was a mess.

If you don't think its gonna be too bad Id just wear a pair of converse style runners you don't mind binning after. There isn't a hope I'd wear sandals. Like theres a chance someone will piss on you (cos there are ignorant f****ers like that gonna be there!).

Layers are great - something like leggings under a skirt will keep you warm better than jeans.

Im just gonna wear my doc marten style boots from penneys that i got during the winter with short shorts! just kinda bored of the whole coloury wellies look this year!:o

deffo recommend wellies and raincoat. they mighn't be fashionable but they will be a godsend if it is wet and muddy.
Another tip is to bring a torch with you. I remember a few years ago friends went to Slane and didn't get home till sunrise such was the ensuing chaos after the gig was over.
They had no torches so fell into ditches and they walked along pitchblack roads.
also make sure your mobile is fully powered and you have the numbers of your friends in your contacts. Also write them down on a piece of paper and stick it in a pocket. So, if you happen to lose your phone and you get seperated from your friends, you could ask somebody if you could use their phone and you have your friends' numbers on your piece of paper.
Agree to meet up at a designated place should you all get seperated.
    Don't wear expensive clothing, jewellry.
Watch out for pickpockets. put some money your jeans pockets and elsewhere. don't put it all in your wallet or purse in case you lose them or they get stolen.
But definately wear those wellies and bring a mack!!

Thanks for the advice, its just the Irish weather is unpredictable, it could end up being a beautiful day, I will wear my wellies though, however much I will hate wearing them.

Hey OP you will actually be surprised with the wellies. Pick up a nice pair only 10euro in Pennys or dunnes. I hate wellies too as I'm a girlie girl but when I had them on with funky welly socks I loved them and they were comfy and didn't want to take them off. It's the one chance you have to be like a kid again. Everyones going to be having a laugh and getting drunk to even notice what you are wearing. Oh and make sure you bring a fold up rain jacket. They are only 5euros and come in a little bum bag. As a previous poster said...wear layers of clothes incase its lovely out but it will get cold in the evening. Let your hair down and just enjoy yourself :)

+ 1 for wellies too. They are a must.

Also bring a bag that can go across your body and is light so you can dance and move around and you dont have to leave it down and run the risk of it getting robbed.

WE make a fortune selling wellies at slane.Bring an extra 40 quid for me :D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 453 ✭✭gypsy_rose

believe me wellies are without doubt the best footwear to go for, maybe bring a pair of cheap runners as well if you get tired of them but theyre great, you can get stylish enough cheap ones in pennies etc. suncream, just in case! a hat of somekind maybe? its not easy to look after your hair so if u want to look good it can be better just to cover it up, maybe a bandana or a hairband? a couple of hoodies will be good at nighttime cos it'll be cold, bring extra pairs of socks and tights, a good raincoat, maybe even a nice fluffy pair of pjs to go to sleep in, if you're in the frame of mind of getting changed before you go to sleep that is? ;P i always woke up freezing in my tent when i went to oxygen so warm clothes are a must.

    have fun OP!

OP why do you resent wearing wellies? Everyone has wellies in Ireland. We need them to wear when it rains.
Surely you have had them as a child and teenager going to school.
Even girly girls have their wellies. You don't have to buy a fashionable pair that will cost the earth. Go to Dunnes or Penneys and you can buy a khaki green pair.
    Weat thick socks with them.
I too agree with the rest of the advice.

What are people wearing to Slane concert?
Not sure of weather forecast, will it be sunny or rainy?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

Check out RTE or something for the weather updates.

I think jeans and a tshirt and comfortable shoes are the basics. Bring a hoody or jacket for the night time because no matter how warm the day is, the temperature will drop quite a bit later on. A raincoat is also handy, chances are it'll rain at some stage during the day, and once you're wet, you're wet! A small backpack is good for carrying hoody/raincoat/wallet/tickets/phone/keys etc.

Guys I'm really small and i was wondering what the hell i could wear to help me see?! I really wanted to wear like wedges or somethin that would give me some height and they're much more appropriate and easier to walk in than high heels. Dunnes have funky red wellies with about a 2 inch heel on them! Also as Slane is an amphitheatre if you stand near the back you'll be up on a hill so will have no problem seeing anything!

Thanks guys :) also i was wondering, would i look like a knob if i wore short denim shorts (weather permitting?)
Or are these a pretty common choice for slane? (and yes i know, bring jeans wellies if you're cold etc etc :P )
