Hoping someone can help, Im looking for an aerial to put in my attic to feed my new Panasonic G20 TV with built-in freeview HD.

House is in Birr Co Offaly.

    Thanks!

Freeview is the service from Northern Ireland, Saorview is the more modern Irish digital TV spec.

You could try with an indoor aerial out a south facing window, the RTE site that best covers Birr is beside Devil's Bit mountain near Roscrea and offers good coverage in south Offaly. There's also links on the internet to make your own aerial which would work fine in an attic space if you've no large buildings or hills or forests right beside your house to the south.

It's hard to tell how an aerial work in an attic as each situation is different and the signal is better if it passes through the tiles rather than a gable wall or chimney.

Here's an aerial though it's more likely to work outdoors than inside: http://www.tvtrade.ie/black-wide-band-uhf-aerial.html

Local electrical wholesalers also usually sell this sort of aerial and can also sell brackets or wall mounts etc which can be used either outdoors or in an attic. You can use string or some staples or battens of wood and cable ties etc in an attic but don't have the aerial beside big metal objects or pointing through the water tank etc.

The other important thing is that Kilduff (the Devil's Bit RTE transmitter) covers Birr well but it only broadcasts the digital Saorview service. No analogue channels. Maghera in Clare also covers Birr with both analogue and digital but you'd need a different type of aerial for analogue RTE1 and 2 along with the aerial I linked above.

If you want any clarifications ask away!

According to this site - http://www.saortv.info/ - some panasonic freeview hd models can't receive Saorview. I'd get this checked.

UK Freeview from Birr is impossible. Freesat on the other hand is easy, relatively cheap and will work anywhere in Ireland. You'll get all the UK terrestrial channels for nothing.

As to the Irish Saorview service - Kilduff is probably the best bet if its on stream now.

Thanks a million for the detailed replies! I believe from one of the boards.ie threads the panasonic g20 can pick up saorview, I got a reply from tvtrade.ie today with a couple of options so I'm off to figure out the best option.

    Thanks again, much appreciated!

You are near Kilduff transmitter and Maghera one is SE of you and the othe south of west if not quite south west. They both require the same group c/d aerials.

Kilduff is due south of Birr, Mr. Bob;) Southeast would be roughly in the direction of Mt. Leinster but the auld Slieve Bloom mountains become an obstacle.

Point at Kilduff and you should get a signal. Kilduff is just north of Templemore east of the Devil's Bit so if you point in that general direction you should get it loud and clear you are only about 15 miles max from the transmitter.
