As a Cycleways CC club member (not one of the clubs part of the league) would it be possible for me to ride this evening? I don't want to step on anyones toes... I'll wear a national champ skinsuit... :P

AFAIK tonight's event is being organised by IRC so they'd be the ones to clear it with.

You can race for me Ryan if you like, I am not planning on taking my start ... you just have to wear a orwell jersey and ride my Sz 44 bike. Thanks for winning.

Don't see anything wrong with coming along anyway and posting a time - i mean like it's a public road. Would also give us a nice benchmark as to how it should be done :)

    Agreed. Go for it!

Well that was fun with a 39*25 :(
Don't know my exact time, I didn't think to ask at the top and then heard people saying times down the bottom. Going by my garmin, 17:55 - 18:05 I reckon. The heart rate graph is funny 96%-98% from 40 seconds in.

19 mins dead for me. happy enough considering I've been on hols for the last 2 weeks eating and drinking my way around Thailand :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭ryan_sherlock

13:38 was my official time this evening. A bit of a head/cross-head wind for most of it but the top 1.5km was really still.

431W for the climb, major negative split wattage wise (second half higher than first half). You can see my climb here: http://app.strava.com/rides/554851#8349322

I have also added it to strava so if you upload your data, it will give you splits etc.

Frank was leading it when i left with 13:22  (at least that's what i think i heard). I was in second with 13:46 (second in the league riders, Ryan got me in the overall!), happy enough with that. Never before experienced the sort of sensation i had at the finish, i was gone beyond pain in to some other realm.

That's a savage time. Well done. That's a 1:20 faster than last years SS winning time. Incredible. That's a scratch upgrade (and A2 not far after that) for you. I did a 15:07. Thought I could have got sub 15 but could not put in a bigger effort in the last minute.

Think i was still on the semi-limit list going into it, so i'm not going to scratch yet :D. How was your time compared to last year?

You will defo get an upgrade to scratch for that, (esp with the weekend result) regardless of where you started. I knocked 35sec off it. "could do better" ;)

Bloody hell lads! Yiz were really giving it some stick this evening. Those are blistering times. Well done!

I don't doubt it. But it was worth it, right?

Only 7 seconds shy of your goal, hard luck! Not to worry, you'll smash through that 15min barrier next year.

Seems like I've switched to orwell :o and thankfully the garmin (not me of course) calculated my time wrongly. Happy after a lot learned (with a lot of room for improving) with 17:39.

I'm happy enough with my time on the night (15.41') - I know I gave it my all, but I know I could've done better with some preparation. Disappointed not to place anywhere, but fair play to anyone who got up the hill, and congrats to those who did well. Sub 14' is insane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89 ✭✭capnsantini

Very happy myself with a PB of 15:48, 25 seconds faster than my best time on that course. At this rate I should break 15 mins in 2013, but someone here will probably tell me it doesn't work like that...

Well done to everyone, it's a real lung buster. I couldn't make it due to a cold - some savage fast times posted and a 1-2 for LCRC!

Epic climbing failure for me. Early panic getting round a jeep=in the red=Blowup!

Well done to tawfeeredux. Savage time by his team mate from Lucan. Does he hold a biological passport?

    +1 w/ elTonto
Give yourself a bit of credit! You did great! You got 19th overall, 2nd of your categorie, this is (probably) the biggest club league in the country and you've just started racing at the end of last year. There are some skinny guys in there that have been racing and training at pretty high level for years that you got very close to.

Second that. Frank Billings is some climber alright & a vet btw! He was 3rd in National Champs after David McCann few years back. Weighing 4 1/2 stone is a great help too :)

[LCRC_BAX, was he second some other year also?]

Would be great to see him winning another medal this year, especially as a Vet!

You're right Keep Her Lit - he was 3rd. He's going very well this year, I'd say another win could be within sight.

Should be handicapping these lighter guys - give them lead boots I say. Everyone should have a minimum 90kg plus bike;)

Might as well update the table ...

    Bohernabreena| Scratch | Semi-Scratch | Semi-Limit | Limit | Women
    2007 |14:57 (Orwell) | 14:49 (Lucan) | 15:53 (Orwell) | 17:51 (Orwell) | 17:20 (Lucan)
    2008 | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a
    2009 |13:44 (Lucan) | 15:28 (Lucan) | 15:44 (Lucan) | 16:13 (Orwell) | 18:14 (Lucan)
    2010 |14:31 (St. Tiernan's)| 15:07 (Usher) | 15:32 (Orwell) | 16:10 (Orwell) | 17:31 (Lucan)
    2011 |13:22 (Lucan) | 14:48 (UCD) | 13:46 (Lucan) | 15:10 (Orwell) | 17:35 (Lucan)

    Q. For completeness, does anybody have the League results spreadsheet lying around for 2008?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭dave2pvd

    Very impressive turnout.

I recognize some names on there from when I last raced this TT. Anyone have the results from 1990? Serious question!

I did better than I expected on the night, clocking in at 16:04. I'd like to think I could go a bit better than that but that finish line seemed to hover out there in the distance for ages before I ever got to it and I know that I really couldn't have given any more without blowing spectacularly and keeling over into the ditch. Many of the times in the results table are a bit mind boggling - I couldn't even shave off a few seconds to get me under 16 minutes, getting under 15 minutes seems phenomenal to me and my head can't even get around the idea of a sub- 14 minute time. My hat is well and truly off to all of those times!

I had a slightly odd start as a lorry went past just as I got the "3... 2... 1... Go!" shout. I ended up in a bit of a tug-of-war with the guy holding my bike - he was reasonably holding on to my bike for fear I'd ride out straight in front of the truck and the following car, I was reasonably (well, I thought so anyway!) pushing on the pedal to get away from him and get a good start - some points in the club league were at stake, after all... In the end he had to let go as I was otherwise likely to topple over. I then had to stop to let the truck and car get by fully, probably no more than a couple of seconds in reality though it felt like longer, certainly nothing that required me to clip out. I then got stuck behind them briefly at the bridge as well. It might have cost me a handful of seconds overall but in reality it probably worked in my favour as given how my legs felt on the first section of the climb I might have been in big trouble if I'd gone for the harder/faster start that I'd planned. Not that I felt much like retracting the few choice words that I muttered about the lorry driver at the time, mind you, especially when immediately after the bridge I couldn't hold his wheel. Any of them.

That’s a very good time and places you well up the table.

Yeah, when you see someone who can climb like that just effortlessly floating up a hill away from you, cranks twirling in the big ring, you know how it feels to be totally outclassed. By all means, I’ll make an honest effort, but it ain’t a pretty sight!
I had a slightly odd start as a lorry went past just as I got the "3... 2... 1... Go!" shout.
That’s a downer alright. I had two vehicles hold me up the first time I competed on that course, one right at the start, same as yourself, and another on the flat-ish section of the back road, just past the halfway mark. Hugely frustrating! But that’s just the luck of the draw when competing on open roads. On balance, there’s a good chance it cost you more than 4 seconds and you probably would have scored a 15:XX otherwise. So you can justifiably place yourself in the sub-16 category. You’ll just have to remove any doubt next year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,830 ✭✭✭doozerie

    That’s a downer alright.

Not really. I wasn't kidding when I said it probably worked in my favour. I had thought I might be able to go reasonably hard from the start without going into the red very early but once the lorry was out of the way and I was able to push myself I realised that keeping a decent pace was requiring a lot more effort than I expected. I had to ease off several times on the first half of the climb rather than risk blowing up very early. The lorry put a limit on me at the very start and it was a good thing too as if I'd pushed myself harder on the flat section then the climb would have hit me even harder and easing off might not have been enough to save me.

My usual way of riding is to just semi-mindlessly give it everything from the start but the lorry incident actually helped me focus better and I ended up using more head than heart, the outcome being a better ride for me.

Very likely, going too hard at the start in a TT is counterproductive. I think I improved my TT times by holding back in the first quarter. Let the pain come to you, no need to go looking for it, it WILL come! You should feel capable of going a lot faster at the start than you actually do.
