I've decided to quit the dairy and start back on a dairy free diet, hoping that my eczema will improve... I use to be on soya milk and yogurts as a kid but was weened off to dairy produts.

All those with soya knowledge come please!!!

I've tried the alpro organic soya milk... yuck... my acupuncturist suggest oatly (oat milk) and its a slight improvement but i just can't get my head around the taste of it with cereal.

I'm having alpro soya yogurts and thats about it really.

I want cheese, really badly, and i want chocolate...basically everything i can't have now, i really want!

Suggestions would be brilliant, of things that you've tried and liked/disliked...

    Thanks ! :)

You can have many dark chocolates they shouldn't contain dairy.

The other alternative might be goat milk, cheese etc. many who have sensitivities to cows milk have no issues with goat milk.

the dark chocolate just doesn't have the same taste... surely theres other subsititutes??

as for goats milk etc, i love it but i find it can be very fattening. I kind of use it as a treat when i get sick of the soya yogurts... sad i know! Lol

Moved from Food & Drink as the good folk in Nutrition & Diet may be better able to advise you.

I dont think Goats milk is that fattening, are you drinking a lot? I would stear clear of soya milk anyway, a bit of a franken food from what I have read and not as healthy as you would think. I think rice milk would be better

If you dont like dark choclate try melting it, over rasperries or strawberries and you get the choclate taste but may not be as bitter if you are only getting used to the taste.

I'm on soya milk as I have a lactose intolerance & can't use goat's milk (I was advised by my doctor that there is a cross-tolerance issue with goat's milk & dairy).
Have to say the nicest soya milk I've used is the M&S one. Tried the alpro first & hated it but then was suggested the M&S one by a friend & found it really good.

Some of the health food shops now do dairy-free chocolate which is really nice. It's not dark chocolate either. Ok I will say it's not as nice as normal chocolate but it is nice.

I don't agree with the "franken food" comment above. From everything I've read, soya milk is quite healthy and offers a good alternative to cow's milk. I personally don't like rice milk as I find it too sweet. Also rice milk has to be fortefied with protein and other vitamins and minerals which soy milk contains naturally. That said, it is a taste choice for each individual.

you could try Coconut milk ?

If you have a hankering for chocolate try getting a can of Coconut milk and mixing it with lots of coca powder and a bit of sugar or substitute ( Xylitol ) - stick it in the fridge to allow it to reset and you'll have a lovely chocolate mouse.

We have baked an almond flour, coconut and chopped hazelnut with butter base and poured this over it - after 30 mins or so in the fridge you get a loverly faux choco cheesecake!

that sounds really nice, only problem is i'm allergic to almonds! might try the mousse part though! Sounds super nice!

As for the soya milk, day 3 of oatly (oat milk) and its actually not that bad, made it with a cup of tea and its do-able! still the yellowy-grey colour is the biggest turn off! Might try that soya in M&S though? Do you have to buy a litre of it or are there smaller versions? Often you can get like juice box sizes?

To be honest the biggest thing im missing is cheddar cheese, i cannot find anything that is similar... i don't mind goats cheese but its a bit tangy sometimes!

Thanks for all your suggestions! Really helpful, especially the chocolate ones!! mmmm. :-)

I find the Alpro Fresh, Light, Unsweetened is the nicest (non-UHT), it doesn't have the strong taste that the other Alpros have! They have so many different kinds now and I have tried them all, I promise it's the least beany ;)

Oh cool thanks. are they ones in the fridges? I;ve tried the organic one as it had apple exrtract or something in it, and it was ok-ish. The oatly is probably the closest i can find to "normal milk"

    Yeah, this guy:

It's pretty close to milk, I drink it from a glass like milk.. wouldn't do that with the UHT kind. I haven't tried oatmilk yet! But I found Ricedream revolting.

What about sheep's cheese (ie, Greek cheeses, mostly - feta, and some halloumi - a mixture of goat and sheep milk, have to read the labels to be sure)? Halloumi is really pretty nice if fried in some garlic-infused olive oil - I use cubes of it as a substitute for croutons in salad (cos I don't eat bread). Lanark Blue, if you can get hold of it, is a sheep's milk cheese from Scotland - you might be lucky and find an online supplier.

I tried to like Alpro soya milk, but really couldn't, so now I take my coffee black and I don't eat cereal. Some people have orange juice on their cereal, but not sure about that! Might be worth a try though, if you're desperate. I second the suggestion of coconut milk - if you're eating low fat there are low fat versions - I can imagine it might be nice on Weetabix or similar.

Those little balls of goat cheese in herby oil aren't too 'goaty' - Boulli, I think the brand is.

Springwell Farm, in Co. Tyrone, produce sheep's milk, btw - I can't find a website for them, but directory enquiries might help you get in touch with them.

    Hope that helps!

Id much prefer coconut milk - not the canned one (which you could water down)

Kara coconut m8ilk is designed for the same uses as regular milk and not thick like the canned.

Also worth remember that soy inhibits the absorption of minerals in the body and binds them together.

I find the Alpro soya light is fine in porridge/cereals, but I couldn't drink it like cow's milk. I find the unsweetened (not just light) version foul, just couldn't get used to it. The alpro yogurts are ok, a bit powdery though.

+1 for goats' and sheeps' cheese, yum! Ardsallagh goats' cheese is gorgeous if you can get your hands on it. Salatkis sheeps' cheese is in most supermarkets and is lovely, kind of like feta but not as strong tasting. I put it in salad and it's gorgeous.
