Should I ditch the blades?

In the last few months I have played a lot of golf after having just played the odd game a year.

I always just borrowed a set but was given a set of blades (Mitsushiba) and have played the last 4 or 5 rounds with them. I've hit some good shots but not really improving as much as I would like. I'm going to take lessons as I want to improve so lessons will no doubt help.

Now my question. Before I get the lessons should I invest in cavity back's or just go to my lessons with the blades? Or is the guy using them the problem :o

Blades tend to be more difficult to hit as they are less forgiving, they are usually just for low handicap golfers as blades are better at shaping the flight of the ball. Have your lesson and see what the pro says, you can pick up a second hand set of cavity backs for buttons these days from the bigger golf shops.

Blades are so much more difficult to hit than cavity-backs. Blades are usually used by under 10 handicap golfers as they are able to shape the ball easier with them.
I would advise ya to get cavity backs if your just starting back into the game. They are a lot more forgiving(when u "miss" a shot with them they wont go as wide than if u use a blade).

The answer to your question lies in the fact that so few tour players play "true" blades. I would advise getting a set of cavity backs but i would also get your swing speed measured to assess what is the correct shaft for you. Your pro will be able to help in this regard.

You won't get a better answer than this ^^^

Perhaps a muscle back blade as opposed to a true blade.
The Mizuno MP series are worth a look if so.
Pure blades are a thing of beauty indeed but there is an element of ego is playing them too.

    There is?

    There is?

Sure, they look great but if you're a bit off then they are just too unforgiving.
Especially to me. I switched to cavity backs because I don't play too frequently. Makes the game much more enjoyable.

There just came a point where I wasn't as good as I thought I was.
The light bulb goes off when I hit a cavity back 8 iron further than a 6 iron blade. Thus bruising my fragile golfing ego.

    Ditch the blades...

Best advice would be not to spend money on anything until you've spoken to a pro and had a lesson or two....

Ditch the blades my good man! My experience is that only really consistent ball strikers (single figure handicappers at best) should be using them!

People check what kind of shafts others are using before making character judgments? Really? I can honestly say I've never once done that!

If you can find a set of cavity back irons that you like then get them.
Just go for some lessons first though and see how you get on.

When people fill out the "what's in the bag" thread, you'll see stiff mentioned quite a bit, not so with regular. Ah it's nothing, funny if anything...

Couldnt that just be because regular is the default so no need to mention it?
Though I do kinda know what you mean, there is a bit of "I swing so fast I need a stiff shaft" but I think thats more about the person than the shaft

Still though young to middle age males can generally get above 90mph on a club which is just about stiff shaft direction. Which in my opinion is the demographic of people posting on this forum hence all the stiff shafts in the in my bag thread.

Also worth noting that their is not industry standard on shaft flex so one OM's stiff might be another regular.

I play Mizuno MP60's they are muscle back. I think they are a good compromise on blades/cavity. Still got the feel but a little easier to hit. Sometimes I wish I had a bit more help but it's just about worth it for the ones I hit flush.

If by chance I get lucky and get a 100/1 winner this year I might splash out on a set of MP58's.;) They are a MB iron with a titanium insert this turns them into a really forgiving iron with lots of feel. I only got a few hits of a 7i of these but I was really impressed.

One option is a mixed set. I have a MP33 pitching wedge but some of my mates have muscle back to 6i and blades for the rest of the set.
