My latest project is a starlet gt turbo, It is a jap import AFAIK.

The electric mirrors don't work. There are no fuses blown but there is no power at the switch for adjusting the mirrors.

At some stage someone fitted a radio and butchered the wiring behind the radio. There are five wires not connected to anything and I suspect they are the cause of the problem though I,m not sure.

I know it's a long shot but would anyone have a pinout for the original radio connector on this car as it looks like these wires were part of that.

The clock doesn't work either , I suspect it's related too.

Thanks for that, that will help identify some of the loose wires. Nothing there for the electric mirrors though . They are on the same fuse as the radio which is why I though those wires could be the problem.

    Thanks again

I think the mirrors may get their live feed from one of the cut wires. I hope to get at it with the multimeter tomorrow evening.

Will keep you posted. I have no thread or pics at the moment.

It's a 95 twin headligh model with the sunroof, metallic black and is in good order, I swapped my last project, a mivec lancer for it.

It needed a clutch , did that the other day, It needs a cv joint, electric mirrors not working, passenger window not working either all little things really. A few small dents here and there. Thats all I am aware of at the moment but I haven't driven it very much yet, I'm sure there will be a few surprises lurking.

Solid Black. It all electric with air con.

I'm not quite sure what I'm doing with it TBH. I'm going to sort out the electrical and mechanical issues with it first, then get the bodywork sorted , after that I have no definite plans yet. I may just keep it standard. The wife thinks I'm having a mid life crisis as it is , if I start modding she'll be convinced.

Well I got to the bottom of my mirror problem over the weekend and sorted it.

It turned out to be a break in the wire feeding the electric mirror switch. all woking as they should now.

Next problem is Power steering is not working. There is a some fluid leaking somwhere around the pump. I'm hoping it's a hose or something simple, I,ll have a better look this evening.

Is refurbishing a power sterring pump a diy job or would it need to go to an expert or is a replacement pump needed? I 've seen the seals for sale on the net.

there are so many of these cars being broken around the country right now, i'd say the handiest thing to do would be to buy what you need second hand :)

Yeah suppose so, though I would like to refurbish it if that's possible. The mechanics is my main interest tbh.

I didn't get around to it yesterday anyway so I'm not even sure if it's the pump or just a hose yet.

tbh, if mechanics is what you're into, and if you can get them handy enough, then its worth having a bash at refurbishing the pump yourself. If you make a balls of it, then it won't really matter as you can just get another one.

yeh thats my thinking too. I'd like to know that it is possible to do a diy refurbishment before taking on something that's not really feasable for the amateur home mechanic.

What do you want to know? It has no performance mods yet.

I will post pictures at some stage.

I'm still sorting out the wiring inside, nearly there now, I think.

I understand, but Starlet GT Turbo is legendary car and it's realy hard to find one in good condition withou any strange modifications. ;d

This one's is in good condition, It has alloys and a gear knob, steering wheel and fancy alarm, on the performance it has an induction kit , bigger exhaust backbox apart from that it's standard. I know they are performance mods but they are pretty bog standard as mods go.

I have all the electrics sorted , one window wouldn't go down, it was the switch, took it apart , cleaned the contacts and all is wll. Horn wasn't working , it turned out to be a broken wire. Rear wiper I replaced the motor.

Moving onto the mechanics now, I don't thinks theres much to do there. Power Steering pump and a cv joint is about the size of it I think.

Cv joint!? Hope you can get a second hand shaft... Can't get them spurious and genuine you have to get a complete shaft€500- they are not the same as a standard starlet..

Thanks , I wasn't aware of that. Looks like I will have to go searching.

are you sure they aren't the same as the standard starlet?

I,m told elsewhere that I can buy the cv and bearings seperate.

I hope to get at this later in the week ,once I have the old drives out I will count the splines and try source a replacement.

Update on the power steering, I sourced a used pump and fitted it this evening , it's working perfectly now.

There's only the cv left to have it in good mechanical condition, After that I'll don't know where I'm going with it, I have been reading up on some mods but I think I may go the other route and return it to it's original condition. standard wheels, steering wheel exhaust etc.
