A friend is looking to buy a new car. She is a little reluctant to buy private as she got stung before with a bit of a jalopy.

    Requirements:
    - 4 doors
    - Not a small car
    - Not underpowered
    - Decent spec level
    - Wont be doing many miles so the mileage and mpg arent too important
    - Decent reliability
    - She doesnt want something that will cost a fortune to fix

What do you think about this: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201112201745605
Where is the best place to get a good mechanical check?

Well in the current economic climate, u should probably diesel, save in the long run. Mayb a golf, powerful, reliable, and nice design

As the Op stated "Won't be doing many miles " so it could (not disputing Samboozle's point) possibly be more expensive in the long run than a petrol with the usual DPF becoming clogged, extra maintenance & servicing costs.

I was going to say Focus, but that Mondeo is nice alright. Wouldn't pay extra for a diesel if you won't see the benefit of better fuel enonomy.

    Ford Fiesta perhaps?

The definition of 'small car' has changed quite a bit. In 5-door form, it's bigger than saloons from not to long ago. I'm 6, 3 and I fit comfortably in the drivers seat of one of those. It's light, peppy, and gets about driving. Doesn't need a lot of horespower to make it move.

It's comfy, pleasant and pretty easy to drive too. Especially the way it points into places.

Haven't heard that word being used in a long while.

When someone says they don't want a small car it's safe to assume they don't want a fiesta. It is a small car. It's the second smallest class on the market.

I was about to recommend a 1997 FIAT CINGCUENTO (spelling wrong)

But I would advice a look at a MAZDA 6 petrol

Looks nicer than the Mondeo IMHO but that is subjective of course

Very rarely hear of problems with the petrol engined ones too.

You won't get many diesel for €5000 with a DPF at the moment :)

I have a diesel Mk3. You can't fault them really. Lovely cars that ride really well. 1.8 petrol and 2.0l diesels are way more common than that yoke. So parts should be easier and cheaper to find. Gotta say most parts are cheap enough. Bought a starter in a breakers recently and a washer motor.
