Im looking to tone up for the summer, nothing amazing, just lose a bit of weight and gain a bit of lean muscle, like the guy in pic. Obviously this means cutting down on fat etc but in the gym I'll be absolutely lost, having never gone before. Im slim already, but TOO slim, as in, my biceps are like twigs.

    any advice?
    cheers.

    Lift heavy and eat more.

If you're already skinny don't worry about being lean until you're packed on a some muscle.

Do you plan to join a gym?

Well I disagree with that. The guy in the pic has not much muscle and very low bodyfat. If the only guideline about food is to eat more of it, he would probably not be moving toward his objective really. He would probably be bigger but much less lean. But clearly his objective is to be very lean, rather than to be particularly strong/muscular.

Lift heavy. Eat loads before and after training. Dont eat so much otherwise. Eat lots of protein all the time. Do some sort of cardio on days you dont lift weights. Going for long walks is probably best for your objective.

Thanks for the help! I'm already a member of a gym, but what Id like to know is, because my biceps are so weak, what weight should I start out on, and what weight should i work up to?

also, do gyms normally have trainers who you can tell what you want to achieve, and they'll show you how?
    cheers.

Check out stronglifts it's a great resource for someone starting out looking for a good structured routine. Also if your skinny and looking to build some muscle then quite simply you need to eat more calories ideally made up of lean fat, protein and some carbs. Also check out gomad basically you drink a gallon of milk a day, this will help you put on some weight which combined with the 5X5 Stronglifts routine will help you gain lean muscle mass. If you don't want to drink the full galon straight off the bat, you could start with half a gallon a day for a week and see how you fell with that.

I highly reccommend you check out the above links, they helped me a lot when I didn't have a clue of what to do in the gym. Also search "stronglifts" on here there is some people who are doing it.

does the guy in the pic look like the kind of guy who drinks a gallon of milk every day and does 5x5..? looks like someone who farts around the gym doing the beach weights and doesn't eat very much. maybe has a protein shake just because that's what people do when they go to the gym.

Yes exactly. One-size-fits-all answers miss the point of a dicussion forum. More suitable to articles/FAQs.

Generic recommendations are the order of the day around here. I often wonder if people even read the thread half the time.

Tbh that guy in the pic is carrying a decent bit of muscle and is VERY lean. The average skinny guy won't be able to diet and look like that.

The only way you can find out how much to lift is to start lifting. Get a trainer in your gym to do you a program for starters. Push them to teach you free weights though, otherwise 9 times out of ten it'll be all machines.

Read the stickies for an idea on diet.

You didn't disagree with me. Your advice is to eat more and lift heavy. You just filled in some blanks.

If your in a gym then the instructor should be able to give you a basic regime of a mix of fitness and conditioning a boxing club would also be a good idea as they can be more tuned in to the more tech aspects of muscle building and also your diet will be a big factor but dont use any of that body building powder stuff stick to the natural foods
    good luck

I'd honestly say he looks better than 80-90% of the people who post here.

No argument there, I read enough cringe worthy stuff/"advise" on here everyday to disagree otherwise ha
