Yeah, donedeal, and give www.farmandplant.ie a look too.

Have to ask if you really need to buy a machine if that's the only work you'll be using it for. How many acres will you be reclaiming? For €5000 you'll get an experienced operator for a month. Unless you're clearing a big area of land would it not work out cheaper to just hire a machine instead of buying one?

it'll have a few jobs, the farm is 28 acres, going by the prices being charged in my area i'd have 5000 spent and not a lot to show. it'll be used to dig out a building site too on the farm for my house. what should i pay for renting a machine or for getting a contractor? my neighbour just reseeded an acre and a half and it cost 1500quid

    For what size machine?

we were looking at getting some work done last year and it was 60 an hour for a 13T machine (in west cark)

€47.50 + VAT, so €54 for a 21 tonne machine. But I found out there is another guy around here, whch charges a bit less than that, maybe 44 - 45 for a big machine as well.

€5000 would not even buy you a non-runner in that size. The steel in the machine is worth more than that to sell for scrap.

Like the others said, consider getting a contractor in with an experienced driver. Around here, a 13 ton machine with an experienced driver would cost €400 per day - he'll work at speed and will will easily clear your 28 acres in a week and for €2000.

We had a fella with a 21 tonne machine do 4 days digging and 1 day rock breaking. I think the cost averaged at €440 a day.

Hi OP you could start looking in a scrap yard, if 5k is your budget maybe someone dropped off a runner!:D

Another option is self drive hire, not a 13ton, but 6-8 ton, ballpark 200 e per day +vat, you supply diesel. Plant hire places will drop it out to you, might be good value to get it by the week, and days are long now.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think unless your driving a track machine every day a lad would spend more time pr**kin' around trying to get used to it. AND as you say, you'd have the diesel bill aswell

I've found the operator is always more critical than the machine.

i have never seen a contractor clear 28 acres of fer covered land, dig a load of drains, and turn the land for reseeding in one week. with the amount of work i need to get done he'd use 2000 in diesel. i dnt want it all doe at once, i want to tip away for the summer, and both my brother and i can drive them, my brother worked for a contractor that did this kind of work

Ha, I knew I should have edited that this morning before anyone pulled me up on it. A fine example of why you shouldn't do maths in your head at the end of a long day :D

I have. I worked for a contractor for several years and some of his experienced drivers would have no problem with it and they would do a far neater and better quality job than a less experienced driver. You'll hardly be using the digger to turn the land? Surely you'll plough it if there's soil or if there's no soil you'll min-till it??? To do it with a digger would be madness!!!
