Nobody ever thought it would happen in the US so what are the odds of it happening here?

Well we have a much smaller black population than America. I'd say it'll be a while, but not because of racism or anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭The Scientician

I'd say it's possible within the next 30 years. It depends on how many black TDs get elected and if any of them work their way to the top of their respective parties. I suppose a black President would be more probable because you can be elected to that post without necessarily being a big deal politically. In so far as "native" Irish people are racist I imagine it would be easier for a black candidate with an Irish name and/or one Irish parent to get to either position.

Can't see it happening for a long time.

In time its a possibility rather than a probability. Right now the population of black people just aint big enough. Hard to see where a population explosion of black people would come from to make it a probability.

If this question was asked 25 years you could replace black for woman.

No doubt we will have people of other races in high government and state positions before long.

    America was discovered in 1492.

Blacks first arrived in America in 1607.

So, it took 404 years until a black man was elected president.

    <<Not racsism, Fact!>>
Before about 1985, the only black people in Ireland were students of the Royal College of Students, or member of the Diplomatic Corps.

So maybe around the year 2385 we might have one.

That fraud? He set this cause back a long time
Came to Ireland claiming asylum from religious persecution in 2000

Yet he was a driver on the tube in London and then got residency in Ireland as his child was born here, oh how so convenient.
From wikipedia (yes I know the inaccuary claims)
"Adebari says he travelled to Ireland directly from Nigeria, via Paris, and never worked or lived in London at any time."
What happened to claiming asylum in the first safe country you stop in?

Is France not safe? And if for years there were no direct flights between Ireland and Nigeria how did it happen so many ended up here?

Does nobody else remember the heavily pregnant ladies landing in Ireland and boom, citizenship for the child.
Until Michael McDowell got a referendum passed with a large majority to stop the nonsense.

Well thats not really relevant since 50% of the population are women. How many are black?

Are you saying Irish society is liberal to the point of extremism? Irish society where I can't buy a beer to take home after ten, where a woman can't undergo an abortion, where our age of consent is among the highest in the world? Yep, we're a real bastion of demon liberalism.

When the children of all immigrants grow up, their will be plenty of them active in politics, personally I see the immigrants taking a greater role in driving this country forward, considering we cant do it right anyway, iv no doubt they will do a better job too.

So abortion is "liberal" now is it?

Sure didn't we have Bertie, the Irish are the blacks of Europe. Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. The Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin.

Which begs the obvious question, why didnt they stay at home to improve their own country if they are so much better than us?

Ah self hate and low self confidence, now there is a real Irish trait.
You'd almost think there was no corruption or crime elsewhere in the world....
Or Africa and Mugabe or Idi Amin or Charles Taylor or even terrorists in South Africa are examples to follow

We are an independent nation for 90 years and even early governments took great risks and succeeded liked Ardnacrusha.
    Less of the self hate

while racism is a big problem in ireland electing a black taoiseach dusnt have the same cultural meaning for ireland that it does in usa. ireland could have a black president but when it happens i dont think there will be a big deal about it coz it will have happened in a few countries by then(france engand etc.)

sure leo veradkaar is half indian and cud be taoiseach sooo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 830 ✭✭✭jimpump

since this country gives such a crap about the queen visiting i think having a black or foreign taoiseach would cause a civil war

Because their parents landed in Ireland or the UK right before the baby was due.
Baby born, citizenship given. Now let's ask the state what they can do for this citizen and its parents

Michael McDowell had a solution, Labour Party seem to welcome everyone to these shores. They opposed the referendum which passed with over 79% of the vote. Labour party ignoring their members and being champagne socialists and desperate to be seen as inclusive

At least it is mentioned in the film when they first talk to one another.

Andy: 'Why do they call you Red?'
Red: 'Maybe its 'cos I'm Irish'

/off topic part of the post.

I think its certainly a possibility, and will probably happen - as I think has already been mentioned - once black people rise up through parties and gain experience in our political system.

The world is becoming mixed raced.

The whole world is gradually becoming multicoloured. This country will have a multiracial majority at some point in future, as will the whole of europe/world.

So of course it will happen. The concept of 'races' as we know them is dying out. And thank god for it.

so in the end we will just have a lot of people with a nice tan

we could spray paint the existing taoiseach, it would be cheaper than getting a new black one

It's not about population percentage, it's about society's perception . And that is changing.

It'll be a fair few years yet given our ineffective system for insuring integration and our tradition of parish-pump politics.
