5 year old Ideal Classic on the way out?

I had a RGII installer in today to look at my 5 year old Ideal Classic. He reckons the gas valve is gone and needs replacing (the new part being about €200). He also said the fan may need replacing soon as well (the part being a similar cost).

He wasn't pushing a new boiler in any way but I did ask how much would I be looking at and he mentioned about 2k for a Veissman supplied and fitted.

Trying to decide if I should get the Ideal Classic fixed with a new valve and potentially more costs soon or should I be considering the big outlay on a new boiler

    Any advice much appreciated.

Hard to say. Gas valve and a fan gone on a 5 year old boiler, very strange. He is right on the price for the Viessmann though.

Ideal Classic's are normally a sturdy old boiler, A bitch to service though:eek:

Agree with johnnie about the classic ,have never heard of someone taking out a classic less than ten years old.

The new ideal logic directly replaces the old classic and makes changing the boiler much easier. The rear outlet flue is in the same position.
It should make the price cheaper for replacing the boiler.

I wouldn't be jumping to replace a 5 yr old boiler.
He also said the fan may need replacing soon as well (the part being a similar cost).

    Gas valve.....

Replacement fan can be obtained for less........

Fan's usually burn out, if it "may need replacing soon", i would say it's likely it's servicable.

Cheers everybody. Was in a bit of a dilemma but decided on just getting the valve replaced. Couldn't justify replacing the boiler. I looked at the UK parks suppliers last night (sparestraders.co.uk had the most reasonable postage). I mentioned the UK suppliers to him but he sort of put me off saying I wouldn't be able to return the part if the valve twasn't the problem. I rang Heat Merchants and Davies and got a price of 180 inc vat so told him that and asked him to get one. He's coming tomorrow to fit it. I'd say he was here last night for an hour diagnosing and will be here a while fitting so the bill is probably totting up.

Not going to replace the fan at this stage. Will it be pretty obvious when it needs replacing?

What I didn't quiet get about the valve was that the pilot was lighting before the engineer took a look but now it doesn't light at all. Is there something that could happen to the valve that would mean the pilot gets the gas it needs but it doesn't provide gas to the other boiler components?

2 solenoids. One for the pilot and then the other opens for the main burner.
