Have these in a 32 for commuting and trips to the motherland with panniers at the weekends. My brother has my old 28s of the same model on his hybrid.

Last time I cycled home I had a 23C gatorskin on the front because I was going for a cycle in the mountains with a mate the following day and didn't want 2 slow tyres on. I figured it would be grand as I only have rear panniers and no extra weight on the front. Maybe something to consider.

I had a double puncture (1 in each tyre) in Dublin city centre in January. But I think I ran over a large sharp object on Wexford st. No punctures in the 4 months since then though, doing about 150k a week.

something like a slick would suit but whats out there that would do the job.

I agree, it's hard to go wrong with them, good price point, good grip, good puncture protection and low rolling resistance, what more could one want?
The schwalbe marathon range is also good too though!

Plenty of 'race' tyres in 28 now. I have used Maxxis Columbiere in 25 and very happy with them, very nice rolling tyre, in a different league to Gatorskins. They also come in 28. Used Schwalbe Stelvio in 28 to ride to Istanbul, also very nice although the rear was squared off by the end of it. Durano is the replacement, Ultremos are also in 28 but Lumen reports them narrow.

Gatorskins you won't get the ride quality but they will probably be more durable.

I was happily commuting on Ultremo 28s for months. Nice tyre, if not quite as wide as I wanted.

I was a bit scared about the reports of exploding sidewalls, so I ditched them as soon as I got my first puncture, thinking they were on the way out, and replaced them with Vittoria Rubino Pro 28s. I crashed on a wet roundabout in the Phoenix Park the first week on those.

Moral of the story: when replacing race tyres for something "safer", reduce speed in the wet.

Just planting the seeds of doubt :). But really, I didn't like the tyre. Then again I used to hate gatorskins, but they're ok now. These will be fine...

    ... for about a week.

    No, really they'll be fine...

    ...(ish).
